Within Melbourne, there are many different areas that you can stay, with each area having its own advantages and disadvantages.  Great locations to stay include the CBD, Docklands, Southbank, Richmond, Fitzroy, Carlton, Brunswick and St Kilda.

Below I have provided a brief overview of some of the more popular areas for families to stay when visiting Melbourne.

Looking for all the best things to do in Melbourne?  Click here for our complete guide on the best things to do in Melbourne with kids.

CBD – Central Business District

Things to do in Melbourne with kids - Trams

If you want to be right in the centre of the city, Melbourne’s CBD is the best area to stay in.  Here you will find a variety of family friendly attractions, a stack of places to eat and loads of shopping malls.

In the Melbourne CBD, you will find all sorts of accommodation – from big well-known luxury hotel chains to cheap backpackers and everything in between.  Whatever your budget you will find somewhere suitable to stay in the CBD.

The CBD is also excellent for transportation.  Around the edge of the CBD, you will find the City Circle Tram route, which is entirely free of charge to use.  Plus, the tram links up with other transportation to help you get outside the CBD to visit other areas and attractions.

Docklands

Just west of the Melbourne CBD, you will find the area known as Docklands.  This is another fantastic area for staying in Melbourne with kids as there are heaps of great attractions and it’s super close to the CBD.

Docklands has plenty on offer when it comes to things to do.  This is where you will find the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel, as well as Wonderland Junior, ArtVo and a range of other great family friendly attractions.  For the sport mad families here, you will also find O’Brien Ice House where you can catch an ice hockey game or go ice skating, while at Marvel Stadium you can catch an AFL game.

In terms of family accommodation, Docklands Melbourne offers – there are plenty of great spacious family apartments with amenities like outdoor swimming pools and fitness centres.  This is perfect for families wanting self-contained accommodation during their Melbourne trip.

The free tram route also passes through Docklands which makes it super easy for reaching the Melbourne CBD.

Southbank

Things to do in Melbourne with kids - Yarra River

Just south of the Melbourne CBD, across from the Yarra River is Southbank.  While there are some great Melbourne family apartments Southbank offers, in terms of things to do it is better suited to those travelling without children.  Accommodation does appear to fairly pricey here too.

Southbank’s main attraction is the sprawling Crown Casino Complex, but here you will also find lots of lovely restaurants and bars along the riverside promenade.

St Kilda

Luna Park St Kilda

St Kilda is a lovely seaside suburb located 6km south-east of the CBD.  It is easy to get to St Kilda from Melbourne by merely taking a 30-minute tram ride.

St Kilda is a great location for families as here you not only have the beach, but you also have the famous Luna Park.  Families will love walking down the palm-lined boardwalk and dining at one of the many family friendly restaurants along the way.  After dark, you can also see the cute little St Kilda penguins come home from a day at sea.

The area is also well known for its super trendy restaurants, bars and delicious cake shops along Acland Street.  It’s also a great place to go shopping, particularly at the Sunday markets located along the Esplanade on Sundays.

This is a great area when it comes to St Kilda family accommodation.  Families can choose from spacious apartments as well as older boutique-style accommodation.  Whatever your style or budget you will find the perfect place in St Kilda.
