Best Place to stay in London with Family

London covers a huge area (though it has a relatively small central area), so there are lots of options when it comes to family friendly places to stay in London. All the London family attractions are spread out all over the city, so there is no one best central location in terms of hotels in London for families. Where you stay will depend on what you want to visit.

When it comes to finding the best area of London to stay with family, I recommend you work out where most of the attractions are that you want to visit and then choose a location closest to the most places on your itinerary. Wherever you book, ensure it’s within a short walking distance of a tube station so it’s quick and easy to get around.

Another tip I’d recommend is being close to a tube station along the blue coloured Piccadilly Line as this will make it easy (and cheap) for you to get to and from Heathrow Airport.

The map below will help you get a sense of which areas are serviced by the Piccadilly Line and the location of some of the more popular tourist attractions.

To help you choose the best area in London to stay for families, we’ve briefly covered some of the most popular locations to stay below.

Kensington / Earls Court

For some of the best family rooms in London, head to areas around upmarket Kensington and the backpacker favourite Earls Court.  Whilst hotels in this location aren’t among the cheapest in London, you tend to get a nice balance between a quality hotel and a great location.

The good news is this area is serviced by the Piccadilly line (as well as the green District Line and yellow Circle Line), making it cheap and easy to get to and from Heathrow Airport and into central London by tube.

It takes about 40 minutes on a direct tube to reach the airport and around 10 minutes by tube into central London.  Plus, you have a choice of tube stations within walking distance of this location, including Earls Court, Gloucester Road, South Kensington and High Street Kensington Station.

There aren’t too many attractions within walking distance here. However, depending on where you stay, you could easily walk to the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, the Royal Albert Hall and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Plus, Kensington Gardens and the brilliant Princess Diana Memorial Playground are nearby.

All other attractions are super easy to reach by either the tube or bus.

Paddington (Bayswater, Lancaster Gate, Marble Arch)

If you want to reach your accommodation from Heathrow even faster, then stay close to Paddington mainline (or overground) Station.  This is where the direct Heathrow Express train stops just 15 minutes after leaving Heathrow Airport.

As well as being easy to get to and from Paddington from the airport, you will also find some of the cheapest accommodation options here.  So, for the best budget hotels in London for families who don’t plan on spending too much inside their rooms, this is a great location.

Attractions in the area include Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens and Little Venice, with other attractions easy to reach via the tube or buses.

Euston / Kings Cross

The area around Euston and Kings Cross also offers some cheap family accommodation London options. It is also on the Piccadilly line making it easy to get to and from Heathrow.

You can also take the Heathrow Express to Paddington and then continue on one of the tube lines. It takes between 40 minutes to an hour from Heathrow, depending on which option you take.

If you are leaving London to explore the rest of the UK by train, Kings Cross Rail Station will likely be one of your departure points, particularly if you are visiting the north of England or Scotland.

Kings Cross is quite a central location and most attractions around London are no more than a 10 minute tube ride away as Kings Cross tube station is serviced by multiple tube lines.

You can also walk to attractions such as the British Museum, Covent Garden, and the West End theatres in 30 minutes. In 40 minutes, you can reach Regents Park and Madame Tussauds waxworks.

Covent Garden /  Leicester Square / Piccadilly Circus

If you want the best family hotels in central London close to London’s best shopping and dining precincts and the theatre district, then choose Covent Garden, Leicester Square or Piccadilly Circus.

This is a lively area, especially at night, with something happening on every street corner.  You’ve got big department stores, upmarket boutiques and shops, market stalls, plenty of fast food, restaurants, pubs – you name it.

You’re also super close to a range of tourist attractions such as Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, the National Gallery, and the London Transport Museum.  If you don’t mind walking, there are plenty of popular attractions you can walk to from here, including Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, the London Eye, and St Paul’s Cathedral.

Alternatively, you don’t want to walk London’s streets; all major London attractions are just a short tube or bus ride away.

The Piccadilly line also services this area – it takes around 1 hour by direct tube to get from Heathrow to this area which is serviced by Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square, Covent Gardens and Holborn tube stations.

Victoria / St James / Westminster

If you want family hotels in London central, the area around Victoria and St James is ideal, particularly if you’re in London for a short time and just plan on hitting all the most popular tourist spots.  You’ll find Buckingham Palace, St James Park, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Churchill War Rooms, 10 Downing Street, and more within this area.

It’s also easy to reach all other attractions around London as the area is serviced by a range of tube lines, including the District Line, Jubilee and the Circle Line (St James only). As this area is very close to the River Thames and the Embankment, you could also use a Thames Clipper boat to get around to many major London attractions.

Victoria is also a convenient location for getting to and from Heathrow Airport, as this is where the National Express Coaches stop directly after leaving the airport. The ride takes around 50 minutes, depending on traffic.

The downside of this area is the central London family hotels here tend to be a little more expensive – but there are some bargains to be had if you know where to look.

City of London

The last area we cover in this guide is the City of London. This area is the business and financial district of the city, so it is well serviced by public transport and dining options.

This is a good location if you’re only in London briefly, and places such as the Tower of London and Tower Bridge are on your must-do list.  Other attractions you can easily walk to while staying in the City of London are St Paul’s Cathedral, the Tate Modern and the Sky Garden.

For all other London attractions, the area is serviced by a range of tube stations on the District, Circle, Waterloo and the Northern Line. There are also fabulous markets in this area with excellent street food options, such as Old Spitalfields Market.

Like Victoria, the downside of staying in the City of London is that the accommodation tends to be a little more expensive, but again there are some bargains to be had if you know where to look.  As this is primarily a business district, you can book great value family rooms in London hotels in this area on a Sunday night.

The other downside is getting to and from Heathrow Airport from here is more challenging. Whether you go by the Piccadilly Line or the Heathrow Express, train, you will need to change lines as the area is not serviced directly by either of these transport options.

Best Family Resort London Reviews

In this family friendly hotel London guide, I’ve located what I think are some of the best cheap hotels for family in London. The first thing you will notice about London family accommodation is how expensive it is and how little you get for your money.

The other problem in London is accommodation tends to be compact and spacious family hotel rooms in London are rare. In some cases, if your children are older, you are likely better off booking two double rooms. However, in this guide, I’ve only included hotels in London with family rooms where the entire family can bunk in together.

Given I’m all about good value accommodation, the hotels recommended are basic in terms of amenities. If you want more facilities, you will need to be prepared to increase your budget drastically, stay even further out of London or, for cheaper accommodation, consider a property with a shared bathroom.

Below I have reviewed 12 top family hotels London offers for you to consider for your upcoming trip.

The Montana Hotel
