Where to Stay in Los Angeles with Families

When it comes to where to stay in LA with kids, it can be a bit tricky because Los Angeles is really spread out, and there is no one central location to stay.  I’d recommend that before deciding on where you will stay, figure out what attractions you will see and then find a hotel somewhere central.

Many families heading to LA, plan on visiting Disneyland (which is in Anaheim) for a few days as well as seeing some of the attractions around the centre of LA.  If you plan on doing the same, I’d recommend that you split your time into two different locations.  Stay a few days close to Disneyland and a few days in LA.  I’d recommend considering looking at areas like Santa Monica or for more budget options in Hollywood.

Below I have provided a brief overview of some of the more popular areas for families to stay when visiting Los Angeles.

Hollywood

For first-timers, Hollywood is usually considered the best place to stay in Los Angeles for families.  Here you will find many popular LA tourist attractions such as the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and the Hollywood sign.  Hollywood is also an excellent location to reach nearby attractions such as Universal Studios via train or bus.

Around central Hollywood, you will find the best value for money in terms of the best place to stay in LA with kids.  However just note that away from the glitz and glamour, Hollywood is not a very pretty place and in fact can be downright ugly.

Having said that I would still recommend Hollywood hotels for families looking for where to stay in Los Angeles with kids.  Hollywood is usually the best option when it comes to the budget family accommodation Los Angeles has to offer. Mind you even the cheapest accommodation in LA is not very cheap.

Keep reading below for my recommendations for the best Hollywood hotels for families that won’t cost a fortune.

West Hollywood and Beverley Hills

Just to the west of Hollywood, you will find West Hollywood and Beverley Hills.  Both of these suburbs are a much nicer location to stay then Hollywood and a great place to base yourself for getting around the various attractions scattered across LA.

In West Hollywood and Beverly Hills, you will find some of the best Los Angeles family resorts and hotels.  However, be warned that outside Hollywood, the prices for hotels dramatically increase and so I have not listed too many in this Los Angeles hotels for kids guide.

If you do decide to stay in West Hollywood or Beverley Hills, stay close to Santa Monica Boulevard for easy access to public transport.

PS – this is also where you’re most likely to spot some celebrities or two – I did during my last visit!

Santa Monica and other Beach Locations

If you prefer some downtime on the beaches of Los Angeles, then Santa Monica is a great choice.  This is an excellent spot for families with the shopping precinct in downtown Santa Monica, the Pier with its amusement park and of course the Santa Monica beach.

The best family-friendly hotels in Santa Monica are relatively expensive though, and a slightly cheaper option is to stay at neighbouring Venice Beach. From Venice Beach, you can still easily walk to Santa Monica along the boardwalk.  In fact, I think Venice Beach is way cooler – it has such an awesome vibe to it.

For those staying in Los Angeles a little longer, other beach areas you may like to consider are Long Beach, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach and Manhattan Beach.

Keep reading below for my suggestions for the best hotels in Santa Monica for kids that won’t break the bank.

Anaheim

If you’re taking the kids to Disneyland, then the best place to stay in Los Angeles with kids is Anaheim – at least on the days you visit the Disney parks.  You can, of course, stay at the Disneyland Resort, but for better value accommodation I’d recommend staying at one of the hotels just outside of the parks.

If you hire a car while you’re in LA, you can drive from Anaheim to visit other LA attractions, but note that traffic is a nightmare in LA. It may be just as easy to move hotels for the time you will be visiting other attractions.

The Best Family Hotels in Los Angeles Area

Below are 12 of my recommendations for where to stay with family in Los Angeles.

1. Motel 6 Hollywood

When it comes to Hollywood family hotels, Motel 6 is a great one to consider.  Located in the heart of Hollywood with only a 5 minutes’ walk to the famous Walk of Fame and the Hollywood/Highland Underground.  Motel 6 Hollywood is also walking distance to the Mann’s Chinese Theater, the Hollywood Wax Museum, Ripley’s Believe it Or Not Museum and the Guinness Museum.

The Motel provides the conveniences you would expect from an average hotel.  Amenities include laundry facilities, limited parking, free morning coffee in the lobby, and guests can also use the microwave that is in the lobby too.

Families are best accommodated in the spacious and modern queen rooms.  The queen rooms come with two queen beds, air conditioning. WIFI, TV and desk.  Some rooms also include a refrigerator.

For families looking for good, cheap family-friendly hotels in Hollywood, CA – you can’t go wrong with Motel 6.

Why We Love it?

The location and price!  Located within a few minutes’ walk to all the major Hollywood attractions and at a great budget price.  Perfect for families looking for cheap family-friendly hotels in LA.

What’s Not to Love?

This isn’t a glamorous hotel, but it does provide great budget accommodation.  If you’re after a hotel with more than the necessary level of facilities and comfort, then look at some of the other hotels in this guide.

Summary

The Motel 6 Hollywood is a modern, comfortable motel at a budget price and is within walking distance to all the Hollywood attractions.

2. Walk of Fame Famous Suite

Sometimes the best hotels for kids in LA aren’t hotels at all, but rather self-contained apartments.  Apartments provide families with additional comfort and space during their stay in Hollywood, and the Walk of Fame Famous Suites are perfect for just that.

This apartment building is located only a 5-minute walk away from the central hub of Hollywood, where you will find all the main tourist attractions, places to eat and shops.  Plus this LA family accommodation is only 550 metres from the Hollywood / Highland Underground.

There are either one- or two-bedroom apartments to choose from.  One-bedroom apartments can accommodate up to 6 people and come with two large double beds and a sofa bed.  The two-bedroom apartments can accommodate up to 8 people with three large double beds and a sofa bed.

The apartments include all the amenities you’d expect including a fully equipped kitchen, separate living and dining area and air conditioning. The apartment complex also has a swimming pool.

Why We Love it?

For larger families or just for families that want space and be able to prepare their own meals, these apartments are fantastic.

What’s Not to Love?

The apartments don’t offer WIFI, so you will need to have your own.
