Where to Stay in Sydney with Kids
The first thing to know when choosing the best place to stay in Sydney for families is that the city is quite large and comprises several neighbourhoods. Each neighbourhood has its pros and cons, as well as being home to different attractions.
Traffic can be horrific in Sydney, so depending on the time of day, it can take quite some time to travel from one side of town to the other – especially now as many of the streets have been closed for the light rail. In addition, while many attractions are in the city’s centre, some are located on the city’s fringe.
So when considering where is the best place to stay in Sydney, it really pays to do your homework and choose a location close to the attractions you want to visit. This way you won’t be spending all your time in Sydney travelling from one side of town to another.
To help you choose the best location to stay in Sydney, below we’ve listed the more popular locations to stay in town and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Circular Quay and The Rocks
The area around Circular Quay and The Rocks is perfect for families after good places to stay in Sydney for public transport, great places to eat and easy access to attractions.
In Circular Quay, you’ve got the ferries and a train station just minutes from all the Sydney family hotels. Plus here you’ve got fabulous places to eat and most with water views as well as views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House.
The Rocks is a little further from Circular Quay, yet it’s just a short walk down to the ferry and train station. What’s nice about The Rocks is you’re surrounded by gorgeous old historic buildings and cobblestone laneways, giving the location a lovely atmosphere. There’s a great dining scene here, too, with many lovely old pubs.
However, the accommodation around Circular Quay and The Rocks is among the more expensive areas to stay in. But there are certainly some cheap Sydney city hotels in the area (see below).
CBD
Away from the water is where you’ll find the main business centre of Sydney, known as the Central Business District or the CBD. here you’ll find government buildings, large office buildings, and the main shopping area – Pitt Street Mall.
From the best family hotels in Sydney CBD, you can walk to most of Sydney’s main attractions and areas like Circular Quay and Darling Harbour. The location is also well serviced by trains and buses, making it easy to get to and from the airport and to attractions further afield.
The downside of staying in a CBD Sydney family hotel is it can be a bit lacklustre in that you don’t have the lovely water views of Darling Harbour or Circular Quay or the character of The Rocks. Also, on the weekends and after hours, it can be quiet, and many cafes close.
Pyrmont and Darling Harbour
Pyrmont and Darling Harbour are other options to consider regarding where to stay with family in Sydney. The area is home to some of the best family hotels Sydney has as well as lots of cafes and restaurants, public transport and a few tourist attractions. It’s also reasonably easy to walk to many attractions around the city centre from this area too.
While not as central as Circular Quay and not as well serviced by public transport as the CBD, this area is still a great choice for families visiting Sydney.
Bondi
Bondi is perfect for those wanting family friendly hotels in Sydney close to the world famous beach. The beach is stunning, and there are plenty of great kid friendly places to eat close by.
On the downside – Bondi is expensive! Plus, while having the beach on your doorstep is perfect for those after a beach holiday, Bondi is a bit of a drive from the city centre and most of Sydney’s main tourist attractions. So you’ll need to factor in this travel if you want to do some sightseeing while in town.
Manly
Another popular beach destination in Sydney is Manly. Located north of the harbour, Manly is perfect for families wanting Sydney family friendly hotels in a laid back beach destination. Like Bondi, you’ll find plenty of great cafes but a lesser crowd.
From Manly, it’s a little easier to get into the city centre than Bondi as a ferry runs between Circular Quay. Nevertheless, you’ve still got a bit of travel ahead of you if you plan on sightseeing while in town.
