Where to Stay in Osaka with Kids

Osaka is a big place and well spread out, so there are a few options when it comes to areas to stay in Osaka. All the Osaka family attractions are spread out all over the city and so there really is no one best hotel location in Osaka.

When it comes to finding a good area to stay in Osaka, I recommend you work out where most of the attractions are that you want to visit and then choose an area that is closest to the most places on your itinerary. Wherever you book, make sure it’s within walking distance to a subway station so it’s easy to get around.

If you still can’t decide which area is best to stay in Osaka, I’d personally recommend staying in either Namba or Umeda – both these areas are well-positioned in terms of transport and also have plenty of places to eat and shop as well as having some of the best family hotels in Osaka offerings. Families also spending a lot of time in the bay area may consider accommodation there.

I have provided a brief overview of these three areas below, so you can work out which area to stay in Osaka for your family.

Namba

Best hotel in Osaka for family

Namba is one of the best areas in Osaka to stay for families. Located in the South of Osaka, around the Namba Station, this is one of Osaka’s two major city centres. Here you will find the famous entertainment area of Dotonbori with all the iconic bright neon-lit billboards, the huge Shinsaibashi Shopping Arcade, Round 1 Stadium, Kuromon Market and heaps of places to eat and shop.

Namba is well serviced by public transport, including the Midosuji subway line, which connects through Namba, Umeda and the Shin-Osaka Shinkansen bullet train station. Access to this subway line makes it super convenient getting around to all the various attractions in Osaka.

Umeda

Accommodation in Osaka for family

Like Namba, Umeda is another great option for the most convenient place to stay in Osaka. This area is in the north of Osaka and is the area surrounding the Umeda and the JR Osaka Station. Being only one stop after Skin-Osaka, where the bullet train comes in, the location is great for doing day trips to places such as Kyoto or Hiroshima.

There are also a few family friendly attractions in the area such as Umeda Sky Building, Hep 5 Ferris Wheel and it’s not too far from Osaka Castle too. Amongst some great Osaka family hotels, Umeda also has plenty of great places to eat and shop.

Osaka Bay Area

Best place to stay in Osaka for family

If you plan to spend most of your time at family friendly attractions such as Universal Studios or Tempozan (which includes the Osaka Aquarium, Legoland Discovery Centre and the giant Ferris Wheel) – then you may want to consider staying in one of the best Osaka hotels for families near Universal Studios Osaka in the Bay Area.

The Best Accommodation in Osaka for Family

In this Osaka best place to stay guide, I’ve located what I think is Osaka’s best value accommodation. I think the first thing you will notice about Osaka accommodation is just how expensive it is and just how little you get for your money.

The other problem in Osaka is that accommodation is super tiny, and family-sized rooms are very rare. If your children are older, you are probably going to be much better off booking two double rooms. However in this guide, I’ve only included rooms that can accommodate the entire family together.

Given I’m all about good value accommodation, the hotels recommended are basic in terms of amenities but are still good Osaka family accommodation options. If you want something more, you will need to be prepared to increase your budget drastically. If you want something even cheaper, you will need to consider a hostel with a shared bathroom.

Below I have reviewed 12 options to help you choose the best family friendly hotel Osaka offers.

Bon Condominium

Top of my best family hotel in Osaka list is this modern, self-contained accommodation that has everything a family needs for a city holiday in Osaka, Umeda hotel choices can be a little pricey but the Bon Condominium is really affordable and has some great facilities.

Family rooms at Bon Condominium can accommodate up to four people with one double bed and two sofa beds. If you have a slightly larger family, they do also offer rooms that can fit up to five in two double beds and one sofa bed. In both room types, one bed is behind sliding screens, so it can easily be partitioned into a separate room – perfect if you have little ones who need to go to bed early or take a day nap!

All of the units are small but comfortable and modern with everything you could need during your stay. There is a private bathroom with a bath – again great for little kids, as well as a well stocked kitchenette so you could easily prepare your own meals. All rooms also feature air conditioning, free wifi, television, desk and small seating area to relax after a long day and the building also has a lift.

Bon Condominium is in a prime location just 500m (6 min walk) from Umeda station, which makes seeing the rest of the city really easy. The large Ferris Wheel HEP 5 is right near the station too, so you could take a detour via the wheel to get a panoramic view of the city before hopping on the train. There are also tons of convenience stores and restaurants nearby, so you won’t be stuck for choice if you don’t feel like cooking.

Why we love it?

The value for money! Cheap places to stay in Osaka can be hard to come by if you want something modern and near a station so this is a great find!

What’s not to love?

The units are a little on the small side, but the layout is done really well and being able to have the “bedroom” partition walls open definitely helps to make it feel more spacious.

Summary

Bon Condominium is a good place to stay in Osaka if you want to be close to a main station and have everything you need close by and an amazing price for what you get!

Eins.Inn Umeda Higashi

If you need to stick to a tight budget, then consider the Eins.Inn Umeda Higashi, a great budget accommodation Osaka has on offer.

The rooms are small but can sleep a family of four in two double beds, and if you’re particular about your pillows, there is a free pillow rental service. In the rooms you will also find a mini fridge, kettle, air conditioning and free Wi-Fi.

Conveniently, onsite there is a restaurant cooking up daily breakfast which is a great way to start the day with little ones. If you want to brave the streets via pedal power, free bicycle rentals are available – alternatively if you want to stay in, there is newly published manga available to borrow from reception. Another great feature for families is the coin-operated laundry.

The hotel is also in a pretty good location with Umeda station just 1km away and walkable in about 15 minutes. If you have young kids who won’t be up to the walk, the Minami-Morimachi station is only 400m away. There are also plenty of restaurants, cafes and shops in the area and everything is very convenient.

Why we love it?

Price! This is one of the best budget hotels in Osaka.

What’s not to love?

Rooms are pretty tiny, which we know is standard in Japan, however these are pretty small.

Summary

A handy hotel with transport links close by and everything you need onsite at the hotel to be able to enjoy a budget-friendly break in Osaka.

back alley residence Hibi

Good hotels in Osaka can be hard to come by if you are a big family on a tight budget, but back alley residence Hibi is a small Japanese style house can fit larger groups without breaking the bank. It’s also a great choice if you’re after the best accommodation in Osaka that is close to transport and attractions.

The “residence” is actually split over two floors with steep stairs so it might not be appropriate for families with very young children. There are four bedrooms with two bedrooms containing a double bed and the other two bedrooms containing futon beds, meaning this place can fit up to eight guests, however you can hire it at a cheaper rate for less people.

There is air conditioning and free Wi-Fi throughout the residence as well as laundry facilities. You will also get a small private bathroom with a shower and bathtub and also a well stocked kitchenette so you can prepare your own meals. There is a small dining area and lounge area with a flat screen tv and, as far as hotels in Osaka, Japan go, it’s quite spacious.

This residence is in a great location if you want a bit of everything, with loads of restaurants and shops to explore nearby. It’s also just over 1km (20 minute walk) from the main Umeda train station but the Nakazakicho subway station is only 800m away, which will get you there even faster. A must-see attraction in the area, for families, is Kids Plaza, which is only 350m away, as is Ogimachi Park.

Why we love it?

It’s a really great option for larger families and groups, without having to all be squeezed into one room as you can be in most other Osaka places to stay.

What’s not to love?

The steep stairs make it unsuitable for families with toddlers but other large families will love it here.

Summary

A lovely Japanese style home, split over two floors with everything you need and room to fit larger families, without having to feel like you’re squeezed into a sardine tin.

Rakuten STAY Osaka Station North Deluxe Fourth

Another great Osaka budget hotel is Rakuten STAY with their self contained apartments that have everything your family needs to enjoy a break in the city as well as being close to the train line.

Apartments here can sleep up to six guests with two double beds and two single beds in the one room. There is a small sized kitchenette with everything you need to prepare simple meals and a private bathroom with a bath, perfect for little kids. The apartment has free Wi-Fi, and air conditioning throughout. And there is a coin-operated laundry onsite.

Osaka train station is only 750m away, and Umeda station is a tiny bit further at 850m away. There are loads of attractions within a couple of hundred metres including the Umeda Sky Building, Kuchu Teien Observatory and the Art Museum, plus there are loads of restaurants and cafes within walking distance.

Why we love it?

Modern and upmarket accommodation in Osaka can be hard to find without the high price tag. But the Rakuten STAY is well priced and contemporary.

What’s not to love?

Having all the beds in one room is tricky for privacy and bed times if you have younger children.

Summary

Umeda accommodation doesn’t get much better than Rakuten STAY, its comfortable and contemporary, without the price tag.

Kamon Hotel Namba

If you’re looking for where to stay in Osaka near Dotonbori, this Osaka, Namba hotel has quadruple rooms that are cosy and comfortable for families who want to be in a slightly quieter area, away from the big Namba Station but still within walking distance of attractions and good transport links.

Osaka accommodation at Kamon Hotel Namba is in quadruple rooms, which come in two sets of bunk beds to fit four people. The great thing about the bunk beds is that they are built into the room and so are out of the way and there’s quite a bit of space remaining for a large couch facing the large TV. There is also a mini fridge, electric kettle, air conditioning and free Wi-Fi.

Onsite there is a restaurant serving both Japanese and Western breakfast, which is great for families with picky eaters. Another great feature for families is the onsite laundry to help freshen up travel clothes.

It’s around 450m to Namba station, with Nippombashi station only 150m away – perfect for those with little ones who can’t handle the long walks. If you like to explore on foot, you’re in luck, as this hotel is within a 5-minute walk to the Dotonbori area, and just a 10 minute walk to the Shinsaibashi Shopping Street.

Why we love it?

Although the room is small like most accommodation in Japan, the way the bunks are set up means you have a lot more living space to stretch out in.

What’s not to love?

Whilst the bunks mean more living space, it does mean you’re sleeping in bunks for your entire stay which may not be every adults ideal bedding situation.

Summary

If you’re looking for where to stay Osaka, Kamon Hotel has great rooms with extra living space, the location is super convenient, especially if you like sightseeing on foot as some great attractions are within walking distance – and so is the rail stations for those who prefer transport – making this one of the best areas to stay in Osaka.

Grande Famille Shimanouchi Dotonbori Condo

Dotonbori accommodation doesn’t come much closer to the action than Grande Famille. And if your looking for the best family hotel Osaka has on offer, with easy access to the transport system as well, this is a great one to consider.

Grande Famille offers apartment style accommodation for larger families, the open plan design fits up to six guests in two single beds, two futon beds and two sofa beds. All apartments have a kitchenette with enough appliances to prepare and store simple meals and snacks. There is a washing machine, but no dryer, there is however a drying rack and most apartments have their own private balcony to dry clothes… or enjoy a meal.

There is free Wi-Fi and air conditioning throughout, making your stay comfortable in these spacious apartments.

When it’s time to explore you have a couple of stations close by, including Matsuyamachi which is only 400m away and Nagahoribashi which is 550m away. However if you’re looking to discover Dotonbori or Shinsaibashi Shopping Street you don’t even need transport as they’re only around a 10 minute walk away.

Why we love it?

The location really is hard to beat with not only great attractions close by but also transport links too, plus the apartment facilities of a kitchen and washing machine are great benefits.

What’s not to love?

Whilst these are apartments, there are no separate rooms with more of an open plan arrangement, which might make bed times hard if you have little ones, or privacy hard if you have teens.

Summary

The Grande Famille offers comfortable apartment style accommodation with great facilities and in the perfect location for exploring the city sights.

Business Inn Sennichimae Hotel

If you’re looking for the most convenient Dotonbori hotel Osaka has to offer; the Business Inn Sennichimae Hotel is a great one to consider. With its proximity to transport and some great sights, it’s the perfect choice for families after the most convenient hotel in Osaka.

Family rooms at this hotel can fit a maximum of four guests with one double bed, one single bed and one sofa bed. Rooms are small but functional and there is a private bathroom with a bath. Rooms also feature a desk, television, fridge, free Wi-Fi and air conditioning.

This hotel is in the best location in Osaka for those that want to be close to all the sights in Dotonbori.  Business Inn is just 300m from the heart of Dotonbori with its giant neon billboards, restaurants and shops as well as being just 600m from the famous Shinsaibashi shopping street. You will also be really close to great transport with the subway station just 230m from the hotel and just one stop or 600m walk to Namba station where you can get the train straight from the airport.

Why we love it?

The location is almost unbeatable in terms of both transport and local things to do, probably the best neighborhood to stay in Osaka for a family with younger kids who don’t like walking too far.

What’s not to love?

This is not the most modern and best hotel to stay in Osaka, it is a little dated and could probably do with a renovation but with the low price tag, it’s really not a surprise.

Summary

The Business Inn Sennichimae Hotel is right in the heart of the action in Namba, Osaka. Accommodation so close to Dotonbori can be really expensive but the Business Inn offers Osaka cheap accommodation.

Click here to check current pricing and availability.

Crystal Exe Nippombashi Guest House

Just a few streets away from Business Inn, Crystal Exe is also in a fantastic location but offers self-contained apartment style accommodation rather than hotel rooms. A great choice if you want to be close to the action as well as have self-contained accommodation.

Family apartments are two-bedrooms and can fit up to five people with one double bed, two single beds and a sofa bed. This makes a nice change from a lot of city hotels where either kids have to share a double or parents have to sleep separately in singles. The lounge area is also a good size and one bedroom wall opens out to make the room seem much larger. You’ll also get a small balcony area with seating so there really is enough room for everyone to relax.

Each apartment also has a bathroom with both a shower and bathtub, laundry facilities and a little storage area for clothes, which you don’t get in many cheap hotels in Osaka City. There is also a small but well stocked kitchenette with a hob, fridge, microwave and all the other necessities. Every apartment also comes with free Wi-Fi and air conditioning throughout. Finally there is a lift in the building, so don’t worry about having to carry kids (and luggage) up hundreds of stairs!

As with our last pick in the area, this hotel really is in a great location with Nippombashi station less than 100m away.  This makes it really easy to get to the main Namba station where there is a direct train to the airport. The Dotonbori area is about a 7 minute walk away (600m) and Shinsaibashi shopping street just 800m away.

Why we love it?

Compared to a lot of cheap accommodation in Osaka, Japan, the rooms are pretty spacious and there are a few areas for family members to relax and get some space away from each other.

What’s not to love?

This is not one of the cheap hotels Osaka has on offer, the price is a little higher than some in this Osaka hotel guide but you do get a lot for your money and, because the apartment is well stocked, you could easily save in other areas like eating out.

Summary

If you don’t mind paying a little extra to get great self-contained accommodation in a really convenient area and you have a slightly larger family, this Osaka City hotel would be hard to beat.

Click here to check current pricing and availability.

Apartment Hotel 11 Namba

If you are looking for cheap hotels in Namba, Osaka but you still want to be able to wash clothes and prepare some food yourselves, Apartment Hotel 11 offers just that.  This is Japanese-style compact apartment living down to a tee.

Each apartment can accommodate families of four with two double beds. You’ll all be in one room and young kids will love the cosy “sleepover” feel.

The living area also doubles as a small dining area and there is a flat-screen television. The small kitchen is in a separate room and comes with everything you will need to prepare simple meals. The bathroom has a shower or bathtub, laundry facilities, and a drying rack for clothes.

The suites are a 15-minute walk from the Kuromon market, where you can buy street food, fresh produce, and even some souvenirs. Shinsaibashi shopping street is a little further away (about 1 km), and Dotonbori is also about 1 km away.

Why we love it?

The price is great for the Namba area as it can be tough to find self-contained accommodation that is close to the sights and still affordable for families.

What’s not to love?

The suites may seem a little small, but the use of space is really impressive. They’ve fitted a lot of facilities in without compromising on comfort.

Summary

Apartment Hotel 11 offers modern but traditional, compact self-contained accommodation with everything that a family of 4 will need. It is also close to some great conveniences, like the market.

Osaka Bay Wheel Apartment

For families wanting a hotel in the Osaka Bay area, the Osaka Bay Wheel Apartment is a good one to consider.  From Osaka Bay Wheel Apartments, families can easily explore all the fun family attractions that the area provides.

Apartments at Osaka Bay Wheel can accommodate a family of four in one double bed, one single bed and one floor bed. The main bedroom can also be partitioned off, making it perfect for families with little ones who need an early night after exploring the sights. There is also a lounge area with a sofa and television, a breakfast bar to dine at and a small but very functional kitchenette. The bathroom has both a shower and bathtub and the apartment also features free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and laundry facilities.

Osaka Bay Wheel is in the best location for families after hotels close to Universal Studios Osaka.  You can reach Universal Studios with a short ferry ride and the Osaka Aquarium is even easier at just a 5 minute walk away. Then there is the Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel just 300m away and the Osakako subway station is less than 200m walk from the apartments. There are also plenty of cafes, restaurants and convenience stores in the area.

Why we love it?

The location is really good for those wanting to visit some great kid-friendly attractions in the bay area. A lot of the time, if you want accommodation close to a theme park, you end up in the middle of nowhere, so this is a refreshing change.

What’s not to love?

The kitchen is a little on the small side but that is normal with any affordable hotel in Osaka, Japan and you should still be able to prepare snacks and simple meals without too much trouble.

Summary

The Osaka Bay Wheel Apartment is one of the best places to stay Osaka for families wanting accommodation in the Tokyo Bay Area.  From here you can easily get around to all the family attractions as well as have your own comfortable place to relax after a day full of sightseeing.

Hotel Keihan Universal Tower

If your priority is to have accommodation super close to Universal Studios Osaka, Hotel Keihan is well worth considering.  This hotel is super close to USJ and has some great facilities for relaxing after a busy day of sightseeing.

Family rooms at this hotel have a maximum capacity of four with four single beds on offer and include a private bathroom with a bathtub and shower. Every room also has a television, air conditioning and free Wi-Fi.

The hotel includes a range of facilities that do require an additional charge.  These facilities include a spa, sauna, massages, luggage storage lockers and laundry facilities. There are also two restaurants at the hotel with the Garden Restaurant serving an all day buffet and an a la carte restaurant on the top floor serving meals with great views across the city.

The real drawcard here is of course the fact the Universal Studios entrance is just a few minutes walk away.  Plus, the hotel is less than 100m from Universal City subway station, which allows you to easily access the rest of the city.

Why we love it?

If visiting Universal Studios is your main reason for being in the area, you can’t go far wrong with Hotel Keihan.

What’s not to love?

Unfortunately, as with a lot of hotels close to theme parks, there aren’t many other facilities like restaurants and shops in the area so you will be limited to what’s on offer in the hotel.  Although there are a few shops and places to eat in Universal Citywalk.

Summary

Hotel Keihan is one of the best hotels to stay in Osaka for families after accommodation close to universal studios as well as the subway station.

Click here to check current pricing and availability.

Hotel Universal Port

Very similar to the previous option, Hotel Universal offers super convenient family accommodation really close to both Universal Studios and the subway station.

Rooms at this hotel can fit up to four family members sleeping in single beds and the rooms have a surprisingly spacious feel, despite the number of beds. The private bathrooms have bathtubs and wetroom style showers, which is handy if you have little ones. Every room also has tea and coffee, free Wi-Fi, a television and air conditioning.

The hotel has one restaurant on site that serves an extensive and popular breakfast buffet, which is great for those looking for a more affordable option that eating within the park itself. The hotel also offers laundry facilities at an additional cost.

The location is perfect for those wanting a visit to the park with slightly more affordable accommodation and it’s just a 4 minute walk to the entrance. The subway station is also just 200m away, which is handy if you want to do further exploring of the city.

Why we love it?

Super close to USJ and there is also often some themed decoration in the foyer and entrance involving some Universal Studios characters, which is exciting for little kids.

What’s not to love?

Like many hotels in Japan, this one comes with four single beds, which is not ideal for parents but great for little ones who won’t have to share.

Summary

Hotel Universal Port is another one of the best places to stay in Osaka for families wanting to be super close to Universal Studios.  The subway station is also nearby so you can get to and from your hotel with ease and the hotel serves a great breakfast buffet to fuel up everyone in the family before a long day exploring the park.
