Where to Stay in Phuket with Kids?

The first thing to know when choosing one of the resorts in Phuket for families is that it is a large beautiful tropical island with various beach resort areas to choose from.

Some beach areas are more popular with younger travellers who want to party, while others are best for families seeking a quiet place to relax.  So when considering where to stay at Phuket, it pays to do your homework and choose a location that is suited to the sort of holiday you’re after.

To help you choose the best area to stay in Phuket for families, below we’ve briefly covered some of the more popular locations to stay on the island.

Mai Khao / Nai Yang

Mai Khao and Nai Yang are quiet areas, home to beautiful, pristine, sandy beaches, making them the best beach to stay at in Phuket for families wanting to get away from it all.

These beach areas are the closest resort areas to the airport and are also home to Splash Jungle Waterpark and National Parks.

While there are places to eat here, don’t expect to find much shopping or nightlife.  You’re at least an hour’s drive from the tourist areas from Mai Khao or Nai Yang.

Bang Tao Beach

Bang Tao is also fairly close to the airport and is home to a range of upmarket resorts, including the famous Laguna Phuket, one of the largest resort complexes in all of Asia.  The complex has a range of resorts, restaurants, and shuttle boats and buses taking guests between them.

The 8km long beach here is considered one of the most beautiful in Phuket, and the further north you go, the less developed the beach gets – so great for those wanting a more secluded location.

I stayed here while in Phuket, and I wasn’t really a fan.  The area is entirely made up of upscale resorts and fancy apartments – to get out and get that Phuket vibe; you will need to get a taxi each time.

Kamala Beach

Further south, you’ll find Kamala Beach – a small village with a gorgeous beach that is considered one of the best places to stay Phuket for families.  Here families can enjoy the stunning 2km beach and a good selection of bars and restaurants.

Kamala Beach is also just a short drive to Patong for those families wanting to experience the bustling tourist area but then return to their quiet resort.

Patong

Patong is the most popular resort area in Phuket and the most touristy.  The location is popular among the younger travellers coming for the nightlife, but many families still holiday here to have everything at their fingertips.

In Patong, you’ll find plenty of shops, night markets, massage places, cafes, restaurants and street vendors, particularly around Bangla Road (considered the red light district).  While on the beach, you’ll find a plethora of water sports.

Patong is also home to some fantastic family friendly hotels Phuket offers at great prices.

While I used to rate Patong – during my recent visit, I found it way too busy and crowded with young partygoers and lots of marijuana shops – I’d give it a miss for families – ok for a day visit if you must.

Karon / Kata

Next to Patong, Karon and Kata are Phuket’s second most popular tourist areas.  As well as being home to gorgeous beaches, here you’ll find plenty of resorts, restaurants, bars and shops – there are heaps going on, but much quieter than Patong.

Kata is by far my favourite area of Phuket to stay in.  The beaches are beautiful – plenty to do – very similar to Patong but much nicer in my view and more of a family vibe.

Old Phuket Town

Generally, families don’t stay in Old Phuket Town, opting for one of the gorgeous beachside resorts instead.  Nevertheless, a night or two here may be worth considering for families wanting to enjoy a more cultural experience while visiting Phuket.

The town is full of museums and religious sites, and many colourful shophouses line the streets.  You’ll find plenty of markets throughout the town for yummy Thai food, bars and shops too.

Best Family Resort Phuket Reviews

Hopefully, now you’ve decided on the best beach area to stay in Phuket, so now it’s time to find one of the best family hotels in Phuket for your trip.

To help you make this choice, we’ve reviewed 12 of the best family beach resorts in Phuket – that offer great value for money.  Of course, if you’ve got extra money to splurge, there are even better family hotels Phuket offers – but the ones below will keep the budget in check.

While some of the resorts listed below have a kids club – most don’t (as resorts with kids’ clubs tend to be a little pricier).  So if you’re just after a great hotel with a kids club, check out our guide covering the best kids club Phuket resorts offer.

Baan Mai Khao

If you’re looking for the best place to stay at Phuket that doesn’t feel like a resort, check out the Baan Mai Khao. Situated on the beachfront in Mai Khao, this secluded getaway isn’t too far from the airport, around a 20-minute drive and around a 15-minute drive to Splash Jungle Park.

What sets the Baan Mai Khao apart from other resorts is that the entire complex is self-contained apartments without the usual resort features of restaurants and kids’ clubs. So it’s quieter and less touristy than other resorts, making this one of the top 10 hotels in Phuket for families who like to stay off the beaten track.

Families of four are comfortably accommodated in the two-bedroom apartments, sleeping the parents in one room in a king bed and the children in the other in a queen bed. There are also two bathrooms, which is great for the morning shower queue.

The apartments have a fully equipped kitchen including a fridge, stovetop, microwave, kettle, toaster and all kitchenware. In addition, there is a dining table to eat meals indoors and outdoor furniture on the balcony to enjoy simple snacks al fresco. The kitchen also contains a washing machine.

There is a lovely pool on site, not the huge tropical pools you tend to see at the Thailand resorts, but large enough for families to have a splash. There is an exercise room with equipment; however if you prefer to enjoy your fitness outdoors, there are bicycles for hire to ride around the area.

What’s to love?

The fully self-contained apartments mean you can save money by preparing your meals- making this the best place to stay in Phuket with children when you’re on a budget.

What’s not to love?

The lack of resort facilities could deter some families who like the convenience of dining out onsite.

Summary

If you’re after tranquillity, you’ve found it at the Baan Mai Khao – the best place in Phuket to stay if you like to be away from it all. Whilst it might be lacking in some of the usual resort facilities like restaurants and huge pools, it also has the benefit of being less touristy with a more relaxed vibe.

Maikhao Palm Beach Resort

Located on the beautiful Mai Khao beach, the Maikhao Palm Beach Resort is designed in a traditional style with modern amenities. So if you’ve got kids who love waterparks, you’re only a 5-minute drive away from the Jungle Splash Park, and if you’re looking for what area to stay in Phuket that is near the beach and the airport – this is it; at only a 15-minute drive from when you land.

The deluxe family rooms Phuket will sleep a family of four in a king bed in its own room and two singles in the living area. The bathroom has a luxuriating bathtub, perfect for a relaxing soak or splash-fest for the kids. There are also tea/coffee facilities to make yourself a cuppa and enjoy the view from your balcony.

Onsite you’ll find three restaurants serving both Thai cuisine and international dishes. The restaurants are all laid back and offer a mix of buffet and a la carte. If you prefer to dine in-room there is room service available until late. And you can enjoy a beverage at the Pool Bar.

The swimming pool is extensive and runs along the entire resort, with pool access rooms enjoying direct entry into the water. There is also a kids’ splash zone and kids’ pool with loads of fountains, slides and equipment to entertain them for hours.

Once the kids have had enough in the pool, a ‘Kids Room’ is stocked with toys and equipment to play on. There’s not only fun for the kids though, adults can enjoy a relaxing treatment at the day spa or get endorphins flowing at the fitness centre.

What’s to love?

This is one of the best family friendly hotels in Phuket, with the in-room and resort facilities super fun for the kids and kids at heart.

What’s not to love?

If you’re after 5-star dining options, you won’t find them on site here at the Maikhao Palm Beach Resort. The dining options are super casual, which is why this is one of the good family hotels in Phuket; you don’t have to be worried about screaming kids – however not great if you are a foodie family and like to dine out.

Summary

If you’re after top family resorts in Phuket, Maikhao Palm Beach is a great option. It is casual enough for kids to have fun, yet enough facilities onsite to appeal to parents.

Arinara Beach Resort

The stunning Bang Tao Beach is the location of the Arinara Beach Resort – and the best area to stay Phuket if you love your beaches. A few steps from the resort will see you on the soft white sands with a roped off private beach space for guests. You’ll be able to reach the resort in under 40 minutes by car from the airport.

Rooms are simple and sleep a family of four in two double beds and a sofa bed. There are tea/coffee facilities to enjoy a beverage at your leisure.

The freeform swimming pool is the resort’s centrepiece and has tranquil areas with sun loungers and umbrellas to sit back and relax, as well as a splash zone for the kids with cascading waterfalls, slides and sunshades.  The kids will also love the games room with a pool table, table tennis and board games.

Fussy eaters are taken care of with various restaurants offering international and Thai cuisine; there are also two Starbucks cafes for snacks and caffeine. And if you like your espresso in a cocktail, the Pool Bar can take care of that. To work this all off there is a fitness centre.

What’s to love?

Having a private beach space reserved for guests is pretty neat – you’ll always get a front row seat at the spectacular beach.

What’s not to love?

The rooms are a bit dated and basic; this is fine if you’ll only use them for sleeping at night. However, if you have younger kids who need day naps and you’ll be hanging out here as a family, you may want some more in-room amenities.

Summary

Whilst we wouldn’t say this is the absolute best resort for kids in Phuket, it is a solid option and one of the good, family-friendly resorts in Phuket. The onsite resort facilities are good, being located on the beachfront at Bang Tao Beach is pretty special, and the pool is a showstopper.

Bangtao Beach Garden

An easy 200-metre stroll to the white sands of Bang Tao Beach, the Bangtao Beach Garden is a fully self contained apartment resort. After landing at the airport, you’re a 40-minute drive to the resort and a relaxing vacation.

This is one of the top family hotels in Phuket if you have more than two children, as families of up to five are accommodated in the two-bedroom apartments with a double bed in each room and a sofa in the living room. There is a balcony off the living room with outdoor furniture to enjoy meals al fresco.

Meals can be prepared in the full kitchen, with a fridge, stovetop, oven, microwave, kettle and toaster. All kitchenware and a dining table are included so you can sit down as a family indoors and share a meal. The kitchen also contains a washing machine if you need a quick load on your holiday.

The large pool is in the centre of the resort and is fringed with tropical palms to make you feel like you’re in paradise. There is a fitness centre onsite if you can tear yourself away from the beach or pool for a quick workout.

What’s to love?

Being self-contained, you can take care of yourselves at the resort without putting your hand in your pocket whenever you (or the kids) want a snack, drink, meal etc.

What’s not to love?

There are no restaurants or bars onsite, so if you’re the type of family that likes to eat out, you won’t find that here. However, the positive of not having any restaurants onsite means that nights are really quiet at the resort, perfect if you have little kids who need to sleep – making this one of the best Phuket resorts for kids who need quiet to be able to sleep.

Summary

This is one of the best resorts in Phuket for kids who are young and need peace and quiet. With limited facilities, guests will either be in their own apartments or relaxing at the beach or pool.

Radisson Resort and Suites

Located a stone’s throw from the family friendly Kamala Beach is the Radisson Resort and Suites Phuket. You’ll reach this resort in under an hour from the airport, and it’s a 20-minute drive from the hustle and bustle of Patong.

The Radisson offers some of the best family suites in Phuket for a great price. Families of four can spread out in the two-bedroom suite, sleeping in a king bed in one room and two singles in the other. The kitchenette has a fridge, microwave and tea/coffee facilities, perfect for making a quick snack.

For larger meals, three onsite restaurants and bars offer international fare and authentic Thai cuisine. The open-air ‘Breeze’ restaurant looks out to the tropical gardens where you can enjoy delicious dinners. If you’re after easy snacks and beverages, the Pool Bar is perfect with regular happy hours to help stretch your budget. And for a bit of atmosphere, the Sports Bar offers steak and snooker.

When it’s time to take a dip, you’ll find the Lagoon pool meandering through the resort with loads of little coves perfect for families to splash.  Alternatively, there is the kid’s pool with a waterslide for families to enjoy. And when the kids get sick of the parents, they can enjoy the kids club with loads of activities and games.

What’s to love?

The Radisson has some of the best family accommodation Phuket has available. It is really catered towards kids – it’s one of the Phuket hotels with kids club and well designed family suites and the pool is super kid-friendly.

What’s not to love?

As this resort has been designed to be so family-friendly, there will be loads of tourists here, which is great for the kids to make friends. However, it can get a bit noisy in the resort.

Summary

The Radisson has been created with kids in mind, which is great for families. The accommodation is well-priced and spacious and the onsite facilities are great. As this will attract families with kids, the resort may get a little noisy, which adds to the atmosphere.

Sunwing Kamala Beach

Sunwing Kamala Beach is located on Kamala Beach, one of the quieter areas to stay in Phuket – perfect for families wanting to be away from rowdy tourists.  The hotel is just a short walk to the beach and all the Kamala shops and places to eat.

Families of four will find the self-contained studios comfortable, with bedding made up of a king bed and sofa bed. The kitchenette has enough equipment to prepare and store simple meals and snacks.  It also comes with a mini fridge, microwave, tea/coffee facilities and a tap with sink.

The facilities on site make this one of the best family hotels in Phuket.  Eight pools are designed especially for families – with gently sloping pool depths, coves, and waterslides. In addition, there are organised pool activities throughout the day for the whole family, including pool discos, aqua aerobics and visits by the Sunwing mascots – Lollo or Bernie.

Lollo & Bernie is the kid’s play area open for children up to age 7 with their parents – it’s not your typical kid’s club where you leave the kids.  However, you can leave the kids at Mini Land, where paid activities are arranged for up to 1.5 hours.

Kids aged 8-15 can hang out at the ‘Teen Lounge’ without their parents; however they will be somewhat supervised by a ‘Teen Host’.  Activities here include listening o music, playing games and arts and crafts.

Dining is covered with two restaurants, two bars and a pool bar. And if you’re dining at one of the restaurants, there is entertainment several nights a week with a range of family-orientated shows. For those who like to keep active, there is a fitness studio, or for those who want to relax, you can take advantage of the outdoor spa, offering Thai massages at local prices.

What’s to love?

Everything! This is one of the best resorts in Phuket for families. There are loads of family activities for everyone to get involved in, and the onsite facilities are next level – eight pools are pretty extravagant!

What’s not to love?

This is one of the most expensive resorts in this guide; whilst it is still reasonably priced compared to other destinations, and for what you’re getting, there are other cheaper properties in this guide. And it may not have the best kids club in Phuket as you need to stay with the kids.

Summary

Family friendly resorts Phuket has don’t get much better than this. With loads of family friendly entertainment and activities, the Sunwing is worth a look. The location is also pretty special, being on the beachfront.

Click here for more information and to check the current price.

Novotel Phuket

The Novotel Phuket is located in the green hills above Patong Beach, amongst eight acres of a tropical garden sanctuary. So you’re close enough to walk to the shopping and nightlife (around 10 minutes), yet far enough away to feel like you’re in a peaceful paradise. So if you’re looking for the best area to stay in Phuket with kids – this could be it.

The Family Room Phuket Novotel option can sleep four guests in a double bed and a bunk bed – which kids will love. The room has tea/coffee facilities and a balcony to enjoy your beverages. Or, if you prefer to have your coffee made by someone else, you can head to ‘The Coffee House’ onsite and enjoy a fresh coffee and continental or Oriental Breakfast.

There are three other restaurants onsite to cater to most tastes, and check the menus as there are decadent high teas on some afternoons. When you want to work off all this fine food, there is a fitness centre with enough weights and cardio equipment to get a good workout.

One of the main drawcards at this resort (besides the sea view) is the unique three-level outdoor pool. The pool cascades down the resort, with each level providing sun loungers and umbrellas to sit back and relax. The bottom pool is called the ‘Fun Pool’ and is for the kids, or kids at heart. And once you’ve finished your swim, you can head to Le Spa for deluxe treatments.

The Novotel also has a kids club where between 10 am and 4 pm, the kids can enjoy various activities such as yoga, movies, games and arts and crafts.  Some activities do have an additional charge. Otherwise, the kids club is free.

What’s to love?

This is one of the top ten family resorts Phuket has on offer. With all the resort facilities at your fingertips and the lively Patong within walking distance, there’s not much to dislike about this resort.

What’s not to love?

Having the whole family in one room may get a bit squishy and will lack some privacy. It will also be inconvenient if you have younger kids needing naps.

Summary

A great all-round, mid-range priced resort in this guide. In a convenient location to go sightseeing, yet far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Patong to enjoy some peace and quiet.

Click here for more information and to check the current price.

Patong Lodge

Located on Kalim Bay, Patong Lodge is at the very northern end of Patong Beach – around a 5-minute walk to the beach. You’re a 25 minute walk to the heart of Patong or a short walk or a short taxi ride away.  Although you’re only a few minutes from all the famous Patong stalls, and there is a 7-Eleven just 100 metres away.

Families of four are accommodated in a double bed and two single beds – which is great to have the kids sleeping in separate beds to avoid those night-time fights. The room has tea/coffee facilities and a balcony to enjoy a cuppa. Onsite, there are three places to dine: a restaurant offering both Thai and International cuisine and two casual eateries with beverages and snacks.

You have the choice of two pools, with the large main wing pool near the bar, so you can enjoy a range of snacks and drinks as you relax on the sun loungers. There’s also a gym and laundry onsite.

What’s to love?

Price. This is the lowest priced resort in this guide, and it’s a pretty good kids friendly resort in Phuket.

What’s not to love?

This is a good resort; it’s not super fancy with extensive facilities on site, and probably not the absolute best hotel for kids in Phuket. However, it is a great option for families wanting a good place to stay where they can save some budget for sightseeing.

Summary

A super cheap resort that is still decent to stay at is hard to find. However, the Patong Lodge is just that. It’s well priced, has some great facilities, and nice rooms – all in all, a good resort.

Click here for more information and to check the current price.

Holiday Inn Resort

The best place to stay in Phuket for families who love to be amongst the action in Patong, and with the Holiday Inn Resort Phuket located in the heart of Patong, it is worth checking out. You’ll get the best of both worlds being on the beachfront, yet also in the middle of the shopping and restaurants of Patong.

Standard open plan rooms can sleep families of up to four in two double beds. The room has a mini fridge and tea/coffee making facilities. However, with no kitchen facilities, you’ll have to dine out, which you can do at one of the Holiday Inn’s four restaurants serving up Italian, Thai, Steak and Cafe style menus.

There is a large pool to cool off in for the whole family, and there is a specially designed splash pool just for toddlers. For those who like to keep up their fitness regime when on holiday, there is an onsite fitness centre with enough equipment to keep you happy.

And for the kids aged 5 to 12, the Holiday Inn Phuket Kids Club will keep them entertained daily between 9 am to 5 pm. The Kids Club comprises four zones, including; TV, PS4, Arts & Crafts, and Games – so there’ll be something to keep all ages entertained; in fact, it may be hard to try and get them to leave! So if parents are looking for a break, this could be the best place to stay in Phuket with kids for the Kids Club alone!

What’s to love?

This Phuket accommodation with Kids Club is pretty amazing; not only does this allow adults to have some downtime (spa treatments), but the kids will also love the games and activities and meeting new friends from all over the world.

What’s not to love?

Being all in one room can get a bit squishy and lack some privacy.

Summary

Staying in the thick of the action means you’ll have less travel time getting around to key attractions. The Holiday Inn also provides a fun place to return to after a day of sightseeing, with kids’ entertainment at the kids club and adults’ relaxation provided by the pool.

Destination Resorts

Destination Resorts is just over the road from the popular and stunning Karon Beach.  From here, it’s a short walk to the Karon shops, markets and places to eat, and if you want to head into Patong – it’s just a 10 minute drive away.

The family fun junior suite can sleep a family of four in a king bed and bunk beds. It is conveniently located next to the kids club, arcade room and kids’ pool. The kid’s pool has a twirly waterslide and mushroom tower with cascading waterfall. The other two pools are huge, spreading through the resort and surrounded by tropical palms and sun loungers to relax on.

Alternatively, relax at the In Balance Spa with a pampering treatment or enjoy a workout at the fitness centre open 24/7. Whilst you’re chilling out, the kids can enjoy ‘Kids World’, the dedicated Kids Club for children aged 5 to 12. There are loads of fun activities, including face painting, candle making, origami and more.

And when hunger strikes, enjoy a meal at one of the five restaurants and bars. With casual poolside dining to authentic Thai and regional meals at the restaurant – you’ll be able to find something for every taste.

What’s to love?

Location and price. This is one of the most well-priced resorts in this guide, and as you can see, you get a lot for your money. Karon is also a great place to stay if you like to be close to the action but not in the thick of it. And also, this is one of the Phuket resorts with kids club.

What’s not to love?

Having the whole family live and sleep in one room can get to be too much, especially if you have little kids who need to get to bed early… the whole family will end up going to bed early.

Summary

A great family-friendly resort located in the family-friendly area of Karon. Well-priced and with loads of onsite facilities, you can’t go wrong with this resort unless you need extra space in the room.

Click here for more information and to check the current price.

Waterfront Suites

Located just across from the gorgeous Karon Beach, The Waterfront Suites is an excellent property for families wanting to stay in this area.  While not really a holiday resort – this is a 21-storey high rise serviced apartment building providing more of a holiday home vibe.

Families who love space will love the two-bedroom self contained apartments. One room comes with a double bed and the other with two single beds – this is perfect if you have younger children who need to nap or have early bedtimes.  Alternatively, it is also great if you have teens who want to stay up late as you can get some shut eye yourself.

The kitchen contains enough equipment to whip up simple meals and snacks with a fridge, sink, microwave, toaster and kettle. There is a dining area to enjoy meals and a lounge area to sit back and chill. The balcony has outdoor furniture to sit back and enjoy the pool or sea views.

The large freeform pool is perfect for the whole family to enjoy a swim and if you’re into racquet sports, there is a tennis and squash court available to have a hit. Whilst there are no restaurants or Spa onsite, guests are invited to use the sister property ‘Centara Karon Resort Phuket’, 700m away, where you can enjoy all the typical resort type facilities.

What’s to love?

Self-contained apartments are great when travelling with the family, as there is more space to spread out and the kitchen facilities allow you to eat some meals in the room instead of spending money dining out for each meal.

What’s not to love?

Although there is a pool, there aren’t any resort style facilities at this property – but you can access them nearby at Centara Resort.

Summary

A great self-contained option in a good area in Karon. If you have older kids and want some privacy and extra space or younger kids who have sleep schedules, having an apartment is great for managing all of this.

Andaman Cannacia Resort

Nestled into the hillside on the southern shores of Kata Beach, you’ll find the Andaman Cannacia Resort. Whilst it’s a bit of a steep descent to the beach, the resort offers a shuttle to get you there. But then you’re surrounded by all the wonderful shops and restaurants of Kata Beach – my recommendation as the best beach in Phuket for kids!

Rooms can fit a family of four in a double bed and two sofa beds. The rooms have a calming neutral colour tone, perfect for a relaxing holiday vibe. What will also add to your holiday mood is the stunning three-tiered cascading pool and gardens with cabanas and beanbags – all perched to take in the panoramic views.

When you can tear yourself away from the view, why not enjoy a luxurious treatment at Santi Spa, with massages, floral baths, and body wraps available for guests. And when it’s time to dine, the restaurant serves traditional Thai and international dishes to appease fussy eaters.

What’s to love?

You’re just a short walk or shuttle ride from one of the best beaches in Phuket!  This is a wonderful spot for families.

What’s not to love?

If you prefer to walk out the resort door and get straight into your day… you’ll have to walk a few more steps here. Located on the hillside means, you’re more removed from the hustle and bustle of the local town.

Summary

This is a great place to stay if you want to be close to the fantastic Kata Beach.  There are some great facilities here, and the views alone are worth a stay at the Andaman.  Plus, it all comes at a great price.
