Where to Stay in Los Angeles with Families

When it comes to where to stay in LA with kids, it can be a bit tricky because Los Angeles is really spread out, and there is no one central location to stay. For the best places to stay in Los Angeles for families, I’d recommend before deciding, figure out what attractions you will see and then find a hotel somewhere central.

Many families heading to LA plan on visiting Disneyland (which is in Anaheim) for a few days and seeing some of the attractions around the centre of LA.  If you plan on doing the same, I’d recommend that you split your time into two different locations.  Stay a few days close to Disneyland and a few days in LA.  I’d recommend considering looking at areas like Santa Monica or for more budget options in Hollywood.

Below I have provided a brief overview of some of the more popular areas for where to stay in LA with family.

Hollywood

For first-timers seeking accommodation LA, Hollywood is usually considered the best place to stay in Los Angeles for families.  Here you will find many popular LA tourist attractions such as the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Mann’s Chinese Theatre and the Hollywood sign.  Hollywood is also an excellent location to reach nearby attractions such as Universal Studios via train or bus.

Around central Hollywood, you will find the best value for money in terms of the best place to stay in LA with kids.  However, just note that away from the glitz and glamour, Hollywood is not a very pretty place and can be downright ugly.

Having said that, I would still recommend Hollywood hotels for families looking for where to stay in Los Angeles with kids.  Hollywood is usually the best option for the budget family accommodation Los Angeles has to offer. Mind you, even the cheapest accommodation in LA is not very cheap.

Keep reading below for my recommendations for the best Hollywood hotels for families that won’t cost a fortune.

Read our full guide on where to stay in Hollywood here.

West Hollywood and Beverley Hills

Just to the west of Hollywood, you will find West Hollywood and Beverley Hills.  These suburbs are a much nicer location to stay than Hollywood and a great place to base yourself on getting around the various attractions scattered across LA.

In West Hollywood and Beverly Hills, you will find some of the best Los Angeles family resorts and hotels.  However, be warned that outside Hollywood, the prices for hotels dramatically increase, so I have not listed too many in this Los Angeles hotels for kids guide.

If you decide to stay in West Hollywood or Beverley Hills, stay close to Santa Monica Boulevard for easy access to public transport.

PS – this is also where you’re most likely to spot some celebrities or two – I did during my last visit!

Santa Monica and other Beach Locations

If you prefer some downtime on the beaches of Los Angeles, then Santa Monica is a great choice.  This is an excellent spot for families with the shopping precinct in downtown Santa Monica, the Pier with its amusement park and of course, the Santa Monica beach.

The best family-friendly hotels in Santa Monica are relatively expensive, and a slightly cheaper option is staying at neighbouring Venice Beach. From Venice Beach, you can still easily walk to Santa Monica along the boardwalk.  In fact, I think Venice Beach is way cooler – it has such an awesome vibe to it.

For those staying in Los Angeles a little longer, other beach areas you may like to consider are Long Beach, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach and Manhattan Beach.

Keep reading below for my suggestions for the best hotels in Santa Monica for kids that won’t break the bank.

Read our full guide on where to stay in Santa Monica here.

Anaheim

If you’re taking the kids to Disneyland, then the best place to stay in Los Angeles with kids is Anaheim – at least on the days, you visit the Disney parks.  You can, of course, stay at the Disneyland Resort, but for better value accommodation, I’d recommend staying at one of the family resorts Anaheim has on offer just outside of the parks.

If you hire a car while you’re in LA, you can drive from Anaheim to visit other LA attractions, but note that traffic is a nightmare in LA. So it may be just as easy to move hotels when you are visiting other attractions.
