Where to Stay in Hollywood Area?

The good thing with Hollywood is that all the main tourist attractions are pretty much around the same area.  Sure some are spread out – but for the most part, you’ll find them all within a short walking distance from the Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue intersection.

Of course, all the hotels around here will be a little on the expensive side – so if you’re looking for cheap places to stay in Hollywood, you’ll need to look further out from here.

Although let’s just say from the start – there really aren’t any “cheap” hotels in Hollywood. So if you do find some where to stay in Hollywood for cheap – usually that’s a warning sign to stay clear of the place!  Although there are a few exceptions to this rule.

Hollywood is fairly well serviced by trains or buses, so provided you stay close to a bus or train stop, you can easily get to all the popular Hollywood tourist attractions.

Hollywood is also well serviced by rideshares.

Also often many families like to hire a car while staying in town and so many hotels have on site parking.  In that case, you don’t need to be as concerned with location – although just know that Hollywood traffic can be a nightmare!

Where is the Best Place to Stay in Hollywood with Kids?

After hours and hours of research trying to find where to stay near Hollywood for our own trip, I’ve shortlisted 10 hotels for you to consider.  All these hotels are among the best affordable family hotels in Hollywood and are in a good location in terms of getting to all the popular tourist attractions.

Ok, let’s get into it and find you the best place to stay near Hollywood.

Loews Hollywood Hotel

The most centrally located hotel in this guide, the Loews Hollywood Hotel is where to stay, Hollywood offers if you want to be close to the action. Only a minute or so walk to Ovation Hollywood (previously named Hollywood & Highland mall), adjacent to the Dolby and TCL Chinese Theatres and a minute stroll to the Walk of Fame.

Being practically next door to Ovation means you’ve got loads of eateries at your fingertips, from pizza and burgers to ramen and sushi to desserts… there is something for every tastebud and budget.

Families of four will be accommodated at the Lowes in two double beds. Rooms are luxurious and modern, and if views are your thing, you can upgrade to the Hollywood sign or city view rooms. Conveniences in the room include tea/coffee facilities, mini fridge and iPod docking stations. Complimentary amenities on call include PlayStation, Xbox, Wii, cots and baby bath amenities… did someone say ‘family friendly’!

Onsite amenities are where Loews really take it to the next level. With a heated pool serviced by a pool bar, multiple restaurants including in-room dining, babysitting (at a charge), business centre, gym, free WiFi, parking (at a charge) and if you want to doll yourselves up and tap down the street – book in for a free shoe shine.

Whilst Loews Hollywood Hotel is one of the more expensive hotels in this guide, it does have the convenience of plentiful amenities and being so close to the main hub of everything, Loews is definitely where to stay in Hollywood without a car.

What’s to love

The best area to stay in Hollywood if you want to be right in the centre of everything!

What’s not to love

It is one of the more expensive hotels in this guide.

Summary

If you want to splurge, Loews is where to stay when visiting Hollywood. Whilst it is a little pricier, you will be saving dollars on transport as you can walk everywhere, plus the onsite facilities make this hotel ultra convenient.

Holiday Inn Express Hollywood Walk of Fame

Don’t let the name fool you; the Holiday Inn Express Holiday Walk of Fame is not located on the Walk of Fame… but it’s not far off… less than a 10 minute stroll.

It’s also conveniently located across the road from a small set of shops, including Subway, Starbucks, a mini mart and a few other boutique retail outlets – great if you just want to grab something quickly without battling the crowds at the Ovation Hollywood.

The rooms have contemporary decor and can accommodate families of up to four in two double beds. Interconnecting rooms are available and suit families of up to six. What’s to love

This is a good hotel with a well-known franchise name and being part of the InterContinental Hotels Group is always reassuring.

What’s not to love

Being located on a busy road has its drawbacks and there are slightly better value hotels included in this guide for what you can get for your money.

Summary

If you’re looking at where to stay in Hollywood, which is slightly out of the main touristy area but still centrally located and with amenities close by, the Holiday Inn is worth checking out.

Thompson Hollywood

The glamorous Thompson Hollywood hotel is a block from the Walk of Fame, around a 15 minute walk to the Dolby Theatre and two blocks from the Hollywood Farmers Market – where you can grab some organic produce on a Sunday.

If you need a caffeine hit, within a minute’s walk are two great cafes; Mad Lab and Groundwork Coffee Co. We all know the coffee isn’t great in the US; however we’ve been told these two cafes have decent brews.

The Thompson is part of the Hyatt Group of hotels, so you already know you’re in for a treat… and the Thompson Hollywood doesn’t disappoint. This lifestyle hotel is luxurious and chic, and it has a price tag to match too. Families of four will be accommodated in the refined rooms in two double beds with a mini bar and free WiFi.

The amenities at the Thompson are impeccable: a rooftop pool with sweeping views of Los Angeles, French-inspired Mes Amis restaurant, rooftop lounge Bar Lis, European dining at The Terrace and a state-of-the-art fitness centre to burn off all the food. Unfortunately, with all these great amenities, the Thompson lacks parking; however there is a valet service at a cost.

If you’re looking to splurge on somewhere special to stay, check out Thompson Hollywood. Where to stay in Hollywood can sometimes be confusing; however located between Sunset and Hollywood Blvd makes it easy to get around.

What’s to love

The glamour and vibe of the Thompson Hollywood really is next level.

What’s not to love

Summary

The Thompson Hollywood has all the upscale amenities you would expect from a hotel within the Hyatt group. The location is good and the vibe is California-chic; if you’re looking to lay low and relax (and your kids are too), then the Thompson Hollywood is worth checking out.

The Adler a Hollywood Hotel

The eclectic Adler a Hollywood Hotel is a 4 minute drive from the Dolby Theatre and Hollywood Walk of Fame or a 13 minute bus ride to Hollywood/Highland. And if you’re after some traditional American fare nearby, there are pizza, burger and donut eateries only a minute’s walk away.

Rooms accommodate families of four in two double beds and the in-room amenities are great when travelling with kids. A kitchenette including a microwave, fridge and tea/coffee facilities are perfect for prepping and storing simple meals.

Alternatively, if you want to eat out, there is an onsite restaurant, Clarks Street Diner, with reasonably priced meals available for breakfast and lunch – along with bar service. It’s not only food your eyes will devour; with the Diner also frequented by celebrities and used as a backdrop for movies, TV shows and music videos… so keep those eyes peeled.

All in all a decent hotel, reasonably priced with some cost-saving amenities available.

What’s to love

Having any type of kitchen facilities in a hotel can help stretch the budget as you do not have to eat out for every meal.

What’s not to love

A little bit further afield from the centre of town than other hotels in this guide, however there is free parking or buses available to get you where you need to go.

Situated on the famous Sunset Blvd, the Spanish style Dunes Inn – Sunset is 12 minutes by train to Hollywood/Highland. If you’re up for the walk (or, more importantly, the kids are), it will take over 30 minutes. However, you can cut up to the Walk of Fame and stroll along here, so you can include some sightseeing as well.

The hotel is conveniently located next to a 7-Eleven, open 24/7 for any late night emergency supplies or fuel. And within a minute’s walk, there’s Starbucks, Burger King and Yogurtland, amongst other American-style eateries. A Walgreens Pharmacy is also a couple of blocks over, which is super handy when travelling with kids.

Accommodation is comfortable and accented in warm colours, with families of four sleeping in two double beds. The rooms have a mini fridge, free WiFi, a kettle and air con/heating.

What’s to love

The price. One of the lower-priced hotels in this guide, the money you save can be used for splurging elsewhere.

What’s not to love

It’s a pretty basic hotel. If you’re looking for somewhere clean and basic to lay your head at night without loads of modern amenities, then this is it.

Summary

The Dunes Inn – Sunset is a well priced hotel with comfortable rooms. Whilst not loads of amenities onsite, it is clean and simple if that is all you’re after.

Located smack bang on the Hollywood Blvd, The Dixie Hollywood hotel is only one block from the Hollywood-Western Metro Station – and if you jump on the train, it’s six minutes to Hollywood/Highland.

The Dixie is also conveniently located between two pharmacies, which is peace of mind when travelling with kids. And for eateries nearby, you are spoilt for choice if you enjoy Thai cuisine, as The Dixie is located in Thai Town, meaning there are a variety of Thai restaurants within easy walking distance.

Rooms are simple yet modern, with two double beds accommodating families of four. The fridge, microwave and coffee maker ensure you can store and prepare simple meals to help stretch the budget.

What’s to love

Another one of our budget hotels in our guide, The Dixie Hollywood, is a well priced option for families looking to stretch their travel budgets.

Value Inn Hollywood

The Value Inn Hollywood is true to its name; it is the best value hotel within this guide; however it is also the furthest from Hollywood/Highland. Either a 16 minute train ride or almost 4km (2.4miles) if driving/walking.

Located on Sunset Blvd, there are local pizza parlours and bakeries surrounding the Value Inn that would suit a cheap family breakfast or dinner.

The rooms are basic and can sleep families of up to four in two double beds. A mini fridge in the rooms is handy to store snacks or keep water bottles chilled.

The 24/7 reception at the Value Inn ensures you have access to someone onsite whenever you arrive. And the free parking is a bonus as you are slightly further away from the main attractions here. Free WiFi rounds out the offering at the Value Inn.

What’s to love

As the cheapest hotel in our guide, the Value Inn is great for families looking at stretching every dollar.

What’s not to love

This is a super basic hotel with minimal amenities.

Summary

If you are looking for the bare minimum, you’ve found it at the Value Inn. Whilst we wouldn’t recommend anywhere, we wouldn’t stay ourselves; you just have to be mindful that you are getting what you pay for here. However, if you’re happy to be further out of the centre of town and the lack of facilities doesn’t bother you – then you should certainly look at this hotel… just think about what you’ll splurge on with all the money you save!
