Gloucestershire is a beautiful county famous for its towns and villages within the gorgeous Cotswold region. Within the county, you’ll find incredible fairy tale like villages, rolling hills and stunning countryside, making it the perfect spot for a family holiday.
The county is expansive, so it can be difficult for families to decide exactly where to stay while visiting and find affordable, family-friendly accommodation Gloucestershire offers.
Some families choose a central base from which to explore the region, while others take a road trip approach and move to a different village every few days.
Whatever you decide – one thing’s for sure – the towns and villages of Gloucestershire are so charming and laid back that the entire family will absolutely fall in love with this gorgeous region of England!
But first things first – despite being a laid back part of England – there really are few budget hotels. Best Place to stay in Gloucestershire for Families
As mentioned above – the county of Gloucestershire is an expansive area – so you’re not only going to need to decide on which hotel to book – you’ll also need to decide on which town to stay in – or towns if you plan on driving around a bit.
There are many towns and villages in the county – and I won’t be going through them all in this guide. However, I will cover a few of the towns we consider more family friendly considering their accommodation options and proximity to attractions.
Bibury
Bibury is a small village considered one of the most beautiful in the Cotswolds. The village is most famous for its row of 14th century postcard perfect cottages, known as Arlington Row.
With the River Coln running straight through the village, it’s a lovely place for the family to stroll around. Things to do in Bibury offers include visiting the trout farm, enjoying a tasty lunch in an old pub, walking along the river and crossing an old footbridge.
There is not a lot of accommodation to choose from in Bibury. Although the accommodation available does accommodate families – it’s certainly not cheap, as it’s one of the boutique hotels in Gloucestershire. However, still very charming if you’re willing to splurge.
Cirencester
Just a 15 minute drive from Bibury is Cirencester, one of Cotswold’s largest market towns. It is a beautiful town with gorgeous stone buildings and links to medieval times and the Romans.
Cirencester is an excellent central location for families to stay. In town, there are various attractions, shops, and places to eat and you can easily visit several Gloucestershire villages on day trips.
For families on a budget – Cirencester is the place to stay. Here you’ll find some of the county’s cheapest family friendly accommodation. However, accommodation in town is limited, so you may need to book a place outside of town. If you’re driving, this won’t really be a problem.
Overall I think Cirencester is the best place for families to stay in Gloucestershire – it’s a pretty town, central location and you get good value for money accommodation.

Tewkesbury
Tewkesbury is a mediaeval market town in the North of Gloucestershire. Famous for its mediaeval black and white streetscape with half timbered buildings, narrow alleyways and beautifully carved doorways, most of the town lies in a conservation area and has over 350 buildings listed as having historical interest.
While there are some good central properties to choose from – accommodation in town is fairly limited, so in some cases, you may need to book a place outside of town. If you’re driving, this won’t really be a problem.

Bourton on the Water
Bourton on the Water is one of the most popular villages to stay in in the Cotswolds – in fact, this is where we stayed and based ourselves for our entire time in the Cotswolds. It is a small village known for its beautiful setting, historic buildings, and picturesque river which runs through the village.
As well as the village having plenty of family friendly attractions – it’s also located in an excellent central spot to take day trips to various towns in Gloucestershire and beyond.
However, when it comes to hotels in the city centre – they tend not to be able to accommodate a family in a single room and they can be rather expensive. They generally don’t have parking either.
The good news is that Bourton on the Water has quite a few apartments and holiday homes available – perfect for families after self catering accommodation Gloucestershire offers. These properties come with kitchens, usually 2 or 3 bedrooms and often a washing machine, and generally free on site parking.

Stow on the Wold
Stow on the Wold is a short drive from Bourton on the Wold – so another great location to base yourself in while exploring Gloucestershire county.
However, out of all the Glouescertshire villages we’ve visited – Stow on the Wold would have to be one of the most expensive! Plus, they don’t tend to have any child friendly hotels as they often can’t accommodate a family in a single room. They generally don’t have parking either.
However, Stow on the Wold has several apartments and holiday homes available. These properties come with kitchens, usually 1 or 2 bedrooms and often a washing machine, and generally free on site parking.
