Best place to stay in Khao Lak with kids

The main centre of Khao Lak is in La On, where you’ll find Nang Thong Beach.  This is where you’ll find most of the tourists, as well as just north at Bang Niang Beach.

The further north or south you go, the quieter it gets and often the cheaper the accommodation.

If you go south towards Phuket, you will arrive in Lam Kaen, where the original Khao Lak village is. Whereas north of the centre are the areas of Khuk Khak, Pakarang, Pak Weep and Bang Sak.

All areas have stunning beaches and sunsets in the west and mountain views in the east.

So which area of Khao Lak to stay in? Finding the right place to stay in Khao Lak can be difficult, so below we look at the different beach areas to try and make it easier for you.

Click here for our detailed guide on the best beaches in Khao Lak.

Khao Lak South Beach

Located in the original Khao Lak village, Khao Lak South Beach is at the South foot of the Khao Lak mountain in the Lam Kaen area. This area is about 10 minutes from the Khao Lak Center, which you can reach by driving via the winding mountain road.

The main beach here is called Khao Lak Beach and it’s a pretty beach about 700 metres long.

While not a real touristy area, those who do visit the area tend to come to see the Turtle Conservation Centre at the Thai Royal Navy Base.  There are also two waterfalls in the area – Ton Pling and further south, there is Lampi Waterfall.

Nang Thong Beach

Nang Thong Beach is one of the most popular areas in Khao Lak and is often considered one of the best places to stay in Khao Lak.

With its long, golden shoreline, it’s a popular choice for beachgoers. The central location is dotted with various Khao Lak hotels and resorts, from luxurious resorts to budget-friendly options.

You’ll find a few beachfront restaurants and bars offering fresh seafood, cocktails, and magnificent sunset views.

The calm waters make it suitable for swimming, and its central location to La On Village, Khao Lak’s town centre, ensures easy access to shopping.

Nang Thong Beach is the ideal choice for families that want to be in the heart of all Khao Lak has to offer.

Bang Niang Beach

About 5 minutes north of Nang Thong Beach is Bang Niang Beach, which is slightly less crowded and has a quieter and more relaxed vibe.

Despite being quieter than Nang Thong Beach, you’ll still find plenty of restaurants, souvenir shops and bars along the street, although this is a little bit of a hike from the beachside resorts.  There aren’t too many beachside places to eat – apart from the resorts.

This area is known for the vibrant Bang Niang Market, where you can shop for local handicrafts and sample delicious street food. Other places of interest include the Chong Fa Waterfall and the Tsunami 813 Memorial Park with the stranded police boat.

Bang Niang Beach is a great choice if you prefer a more laid-back atmosphere while still being close to amenities.

Khuk Khak Beach

After Bang Niang Beach is Khuk Khak Beach, a much less touristy area, providing a rustic beach experience, it’s an ideal place for leisurely strolls, collecting seashells, and enjoying the natural beauty of the coastline.

There’s not a whole lot to do around Khuk Khak Beach, which means it’s not heaving with tourists. However, there are local markets open in the morning and evening.

Being just a 5 to 10 minute drive from Bang Niang Beach and Nang Thong Beach, Khuk Khak Beach is ideal for those wanting a quiet base but within easy reach of the action.

Pakarang Beach

Located just north of Khuk Khak, Pakarang Beach is a large area, yet it is a quiet, secluded spot with just a couple of places to eat and resorts.

The beach is lined with Casuarina trees, has soft sand, and unique tidal pool formations during low tide, offering a chance to explore marine life.

Even if you don’t stay at Pakarang Beach, we recommend coming to chill out for a few hours at Memories Beach Bar.  It has a cool atmosphere, great food, sun loungers and massages.

Coconut Beach

While you won’t find any accommodation here – what you will find is a gorgeous beach, with coconut palms swaying in the breeze and minimal development.  There are no waves here, so it’s perfect for families with little ones.

You’ll find a few restaurants and bars along Coconut Beach – the perfect spot for watching the sunset.

While you can’t stay here – I’d definitely recommend spending at least one day here while holidaying in Khao Lak.  We loved chilling out here.

White Sand Beach

While generally just an extension of Coconut Beach, White Sand Beach does become cut off from Coconut Beach during high tide – so I have listed them separately for the purposes of this article.

White Sand Beach is a gorgeous beach, known for its pristine, powdery sands and clear waters. The beach is set in a bay surrounded by lush green hills and is an excellent place for swimming and watching the sunset. The beach here has no waves, perfect for families with young kids.

While quieter than other areas, you can still find laid-back beach bars, restaurants and massage shops such as Thai Beach and Secret Bar.

Pak Weep Beach

Located some 12 km from the centre of Khao Lak, Pak Weep Beach is a beautiful stretch of beach in a quieter part of town.

Despite being a quiet area, you’ll still find some fantastic resorts here, making it ideal for families that intend to spend plenty of time making use of their resort facilities and wanting a gorgeous, quiet beach all to themselves.

The beach here is lovely and wide with light coloured sand and turquoise water, with gentle to no waves.  It’s ideal for families and is one of my favourite beaches in Khao Lak.

There aren’t too many tourist attractions here, so you will need to drive or get a taxi into town if you want to venture further afield.  Although there are plenty of restaurants and bars along the beachfront, such as Bambi Restaurant, The Rock Bar and Pason Restaurant.  There are also multiple beachside massages too.

We stayed here for a few days when we last visited Khao Lak and highly recommend it.

Bang Sak Beach

Further north, Bang Sak Beach is less developed and offers a quieter atmosphere.

At the beach, you will find several local Thai restaurants and food stalls. Garang Cafe is on the beach, with delicious ice cream, bakery goods and coffee.

Just 5 minutes away is the Bang Muang Market, which is open daily. Bang Sak is also close to Ban Nam Khem, where the Tsunami Memorial Center is located and the pier to take the ferry to Ko Kho Kao island.

Best Khao Lak family hotels review

After hours of research and staying in Khao Lak,  I’ve shortlisted and reviewed 14 of the best resorts Khao Lak offers for families.

Kalima Resort and Villas

The incredible Kalima Resort and Villas certainly has the wow factor! It’s in Khao Lak South Beach, and there are a few restaurants within 300 metres of the hotel.

Families will love the on site kids club which is suitable for kids aged 4 to 12.  The kids club offers a range of activities designed for every age in a multi-purpose children’s play area that’s fully air-conditioned and specially designed for safety. The play and entertainment room is filled with modern gadgets and soft toys to keep the kids occupied.

The kids club leads out to the kid’s pool area which comes complete with waterslides and other interactive water features.

In addition to the kid’s pool, there is an additional pool, bikes to use, a gym, a bar and a restaurant. There is free WiFi, free parking, a spa and a 24 hour front desk. Rooms service and an airport shuttle is also available.  The hotel also offers a very handy shuttle service to Khao Lak and Bang Niang.

Families can book an enormous two bedroom suite which sleeps up to 4 people in 1 double and 2 single beds. It has a separate living area with seating and a TV, plus a small kitchenette with a fridge, kettle and sink. There is also a desk, safe and minibar and the ensuite has a walk-in shower plus a freestanding bathtub.

For a little extra cost per night, you can get all this plus your own private pool and small sun terrace.

Extra beds are available for an additional cost and cots are free on request.

Lastly, breakfast is included in the room rate.

What we love?

We love the option of having your very own private pool and the kids’ facilities, particularly the kids club.

What we don’t love?

The hotel is in an isolated location and is a little pricey for Thailand – but you do get a lot for your money at this 5 star hotel. Plus it is just a short drive into the centre of town and there is a free shuttle available.

Summary

Although the 5 star Kalima is not cheap accommodation in Khao Lak, it is one of the best Khao Lak beach hotels for families.

X10 Khao Lak Resort

The X10 Khao Lak Resort in Nang Thong Beach is such a great option for families wanting a central location and excellent on site facilities for the kids.  It’s a gorgeous beachfront hotel that we stayed at while in Khao Lak and loved (you can read our full review here).

There is so much here for the kids to do – it’s crazy!  There is a daily kids club open from 9 am to 5 pm suitable for kids ages 5-12.  Here they can enjoy a range of activities such as arts and crafts, movies, video games and more.  For kids under 5, babysitting is available at an additional cost.

There are two pools for the kids including a super fun splash park with heaps of interactive water features.  There are also an additional 5 pools – including one adults only pool.  Other things to do include a gym, table tennis, pool table, water sports activities and a day spa.

For dining, you’ve got the choice of three restaurants a Thai restaurant, a seafood restaurant or you can grab something more casual by the pool.  There is a great beach bar and my personal favourite a swim up pool bar.  There are also additional off site places to eat super close by.

If you want to venture into town, there is also a shuttle bus that takes you to the Khao Lak Centre and Bang Niang for 50 THB per person.  It runs a few times a day and you can buy shuttle tickets at the reception.

Families can book a Kids Suite in the Family Wing or the Beach Wing. Each suite has 1 double bed and a separate kids’ room with bunk beds. The kid’s rooms also have a child height desk, a TV, a playmat and bean bag seating.

The rest of the suite offers a TV, a desk, a fridge and a kettle. There is a walk-in shower in the ensuite, plus each suite has a balcony with seating and pool views.

What we love?

We love the separate kid’s bedroom so parents can stay up after the kids have gone to bed. We enjoyed all the facilities, particularly the 7 pools, the kids pool and kids club!

What we don’t love?

The kids club doesn’t accept children under 5 but you can arrange a babysitter to take them in at an additional cost.

Summary

We were very impressed with the spacious rooms, customer service and communal facilities at the X10. It is undoubtedly one of the best Khao Lak hotels on the beach

Kokotel Khao Lak Lighthouse

The Kokotel Khao Lak Lighthouse is a contemporary hotel on Nang Thong Beach.

The centre of the resort is a lovely swimming pool which while not overly big compared to some other pools in this guide, it’s a decent size for the family to enjoy.

There is a lovely private beach area for guests to enjoy, with the lovely Coconuts restaurant and bar.  There is also an on site gym.

Family rooms can book a room which comes with 2 extra large double beds. The room also features a TV, safe, kettle and fridge. The glass enclosed ensuite has a shower. Each room has a balcony with seating and jungle or sea views.

For a small extra cost, you can book a two bed sea view suite which sleeps 4 in 2 large double beds. These suites have a large sofa with a TV plus a generous terrace with seating and loungers.

Larger families can book the Duplex suite, which sleeps 6 in 3 double beds.

What we love?

For the size of the room and the communal facilities, this hotel is great value for money.

What we don’t love?

The Kokotel Khao Lak Lighthouse doesn’t have as many amenities for children as other resorts in this area.

For dining, the resort has you well and truly covered there too with multiple restaurants and bars.  There’s a beachside seafood restaurant, casual bistro and swim up pool bar just to name a few.

In terms of accommodation, there are a range of great family room options.  Standard family rooms sleep up to 4 people in 1 double bed and 2 single beds. Parents will appreciate having their own space with a sliding door between the kid’s room and theirs.

There’s also the option of upgrading to pool access rooms, where you can swim right outside – it’s like having your own private swimming pool.  If you need additional space, there is also the option of a two bedroom suite.

All rooms come with a desk, safe, TV and a kettle, plus the ensuite has a shower and a freestanding bathtub.

What we love?

So many things! The option for a room with direct pool access, the waterslides, and the spacious rooms, to name a few.

What we don’t love?

The excellent facilities come with a hefty price tag, but you get a lot for your money.

Outrigger Khao Lak Beach Resort

The Outrigger Khao Lak Beach Resort is on a beautiful stretch of Bang Sak Beach.  While in a fairly isolated location, this resort is fabulous for families and offers loads of facilities for a decent price.

Firstly kids aged 4-12 will enjoy being entertained in the Coral Kids’ Club which is open daily from 10 am to 7.30 pm with a short break for lunch and dinner.  The kids club features a ball pit, outdoor play area, arts and crafts, sports activities and more.   Activities on offer include pool games, yoga, painting, beach walks and more.

The Outrigger Khao Lak Beach Resort features a huge central swimming pool, a kid’s pool and a spa.  Other on site facilities include a gym, water sports activities and a games room with pool and table tennis.  Massages and cooking classes are also on offer.

There are two restaurants on the property – the Edgewater Restaurant and Bar and Mala Kitchen.  Room service is also available.

Families can book a room with a king and bunk beds. The rooms are huge, so you won’t feel squashed and you can screen off the area between the parents’ and kids beds.

Family rooms feature a kettle, two TVs (one with a PlayStation), a desk, a safe and a fridge. The ensuite has a walk-in shower and the patio has seating and garden views.

What we love?

Huge rooms with a play area for the kids and the ability to screen off the kid’s and parents sleeping areas.

What we don’t love?

The location is a little isolated and far from the centre of town.

Summary

Although it’s not the cheapest hotel on this list, the Outrigger is an excellent family friendly resort with a stack of great on site facilities perfect for keeping little ones entertained.

Graceland Khao Lak Beach Resort

The Graceland Khao Lak Beach Resort is on the pristine white sands of Bang Sak Beach, a 10 minute drive from the centre of Khao Lak. And I think it’s fair to say this is the only resort I’ve heard of with its own bowling alley!

Not only does the Graceland Resort have a bowling alley but it has loads of fun things to keep the entire family entertained.  Activities the entire family can enjoy include cooking, yoga, boxing, tennis, water aerobics, pool, snooker and more.

Parents and the kids will be pleased to know there is also a kids club on site, open daily from 8 am to 9 pm.  The late closing time is perfect for parents wanting to have a romantic dinner for two.  The kids club has an indoor playground, colouring and craft corner, soft play room, toys, video games and more.

We haven’t even mentioned the two stunning pools yet – if you stay in one of the ground floor rooms you’ll even have direct pool access.  The pools have spas and plenty of sun loungers for relaxing.

Other on site facilities include a gym, sauna and day spa.  There are also three restaurants serving up a range of cuisines including Thai, Italian, and buffet style dining.

Family rooms come with a queen and single bed as well as a day bed so can comfortably sleep four people.  Rooms also feature tea and coffee making facilities, a TV, an ensuite and a patio with seating.  Suites even have patios with a bathtub.

What we love?

The kids club being open til 9 pm is great for parents wanting a romantic dinner or two while on holiday.

What we don’t love?

Graceland Khaolak Beach Resort is at the further end of Khao Lak, so it is a little isolated, but if you’re hoping for a tranquil holiday, you’ll love it.

Summary

Graceland Beach Resort certainly offers something for the entire family – you won’t be bored here – it’s ideal whether your family likes to be active or spend their time relaxing while on holiday.
