Best things to do in Khao Lak with kids

Below, we cover the best things to do in Khao Lak with family.

Explore the best beaches in Khao Lak

Family holidays Khao Lak offers include long days at the beach.  And the good news is with so many gorgeous beaches to choose from, you’ll never get bored.

The best beaches in Khao Lak are known for their powdery white sands, crystal-clear waters, and lush greenery, creating a gorgeous backdrop for relaxation and family friendly activities.

Bang Niang Beach is one of the most famous beaches, known for its long stretches of golden sand and vibrant local atmosphere. Families can take long walks along the beach, swim, relax on sun lounges and enjoy gorgeous sunsets.

Nang Thong Beach, another popular tourist beach in Khao Lak, is known for its wide shoreline and proximity to various dining and entertainment options. It’s an ideal spot to enjoy relaxation and local culture. Nang Thong Beach offers a diverse range of activities, including swimming, water sports, sunbathing, and eating local cuisine at beachfront restaurants.

Pak Weep Beach is a good choice for those seeking a quieter retreat. Coconut groves line this secluded beach and has a more tranquil setting, perfect for those looking to unwind and escape the crowds.

These are just some beaches to explore on your holidays in Khao LakClick here to read our full guide on the best beaches in Khao Lak.

Royal Thai Navy Third Fleet Sea Turtle Conservation Centre

One of the excursions in Khao Lak the kids will enjoy is a visit to the Turtle Conservation Centre.  This sanctuary is inside the Royal Thai Navy’s Third Fleet and is home to approximately 1800 injured or ill turtles.

With sea turtles being an endangered species, many of the turtles here are just hatchlings, kept at the centre until they grow to a size that is better for survival.

Visitors to the centre can walk around the tanks, but of course, you cannot touch the turtles.  There are signs on each tank letting you know how old the turtles are and other informational signs giving you broader information.

With the help of the staff from the conservation centre, thousands of turtles are released back into the ocean each year.

If the kids get hungry while exploring the centre, a small cafe sells snacks and drinks.

Getting to the centre on your own is reasonably easy.  Tell the guard at the gate of the naval base that you’re there to see the turtles, and then follow the signs to the centre.

Alternatively, you can join various organised tours, which combine a few other tourist attractions.  Click here to see a few on offer.

Allow 30 minutes to visit the centre.

Location: Tambon lam kaem, amphoe thai mueang, Chang Wat Phang-Nga

Hours: Daily from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm

Price: 100 THB per person (approx $4.30 AUD)

Ton Pling Waterfall

Ton Pling Waterfall is a small waterfall with clear water where you can swim –  making it one of the perfect Khao Lak places to visit with the kids.  The waterfall is easy to access and consequently gets crowded – most likely as entry is free also.

It can be slippery on the rocks, so ensure the kids have good water shoes.  However, there is a nice sandy section where they can easily stand and swim.

Like most waterfalls, this one is much better after plenty of rain.

Location: 8 Phet Kasem Rd, Lam Kaen, Thai Mueang District

Hours: Daily from 8 am to 6 pm

Price: Free

Khao Lak Lam Ru National Park

Khao Lak Lam Ru is a small national park well worth exploring.  The park is split up into several sections.

From the visitor centre, you can take the Hat Lek nature trail.  This hike is a 1.5 km walk that takes you to two secluded beaches.

First, take the trail to the right for a short and easy walk to Khao Lak Beach.  This is a lovely, quiet beach with lots of boulders.  It may not be ideal for swimming – but it is perfect for the kids to splash about in the shallow waters.

Next, take the longer part of the trail to the left to Small Sandy Beach.  This is a much more challenging walk with some quite steep sections along the way.  The beach is lovely though and well worth a visit.  If you’re not keen on hiking, you can drive there and take a shorter and easier walk to reach the beach.

There are also several waterfalls in other sections of the National Park – see more about these below.

An important tip – as there is an entry fee to enter the National Park if you plan on also visiting Ton Chang Far Waterfall and Lampi Waterfall – it’s worthwhile going on the same day to save yourself having to purchase the entry ticket each day.

If you visit all three places in one day, it is one of the cheap things to do in Khao Lak.

Location: 7 Phet Kasem Rd, Khuekkhak, Takua Pa District

Hours: Daily from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm

Price: 100 THB per person (approx $4.30 AUD)

Lampi Waterfall

Lampi Waterfall is the largest waterfall within Khao Lak Lam Ru National Park and is quite impressive.  It’s super easy to reach the waterfall too with just a few minutes walk from the car park – so certainly one of the easy things to do near Khao Lak with kids.

This multi tiered waterfall is perfect for swimming in – so be sure to bring your swimmers.  The best pool to swim in is the large pool at the foot of the falls.

While there, it’s worth seeking out the hanging bridge just a short distance from the falls.  From here you can view the waterfall from above and get some great photos.

Apparently, Lampi is very popular with locals and can become very busy on weekends, so it might be worth visiting on a weekday if you can.

As noted above, the waterfall is within the national park, so you must pay an entry fee.  If you purchase this ticket, be sure to keep it as on the same day, you’ll be able to use it for entry into Ton Chong Fa Waterfall as well as do any of the hiking trails within the National Park.

At Lampi Waterfall, you’ll find a shop and toilets.

Location: F77J+MQ5, Thai Mueang, Thai Mueang District

Hours: Daily from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm

Price: 100 THB per person (approx $4.30 AUD)

Ton Chong Fa Waterfall

One of the top things to do in Khao Lak is to visit the Ton Chong Fa Waterfall.

Tong Chong Fa waterfall has five levels, creating a series of waterfalls and pools.  It’s a bit confusing though, as the first pool is simply called the Spa Fish, and the next four pools are numbered 1 to 4.

The 3rd pool (so really the 4th) is the highest level and has a 10 metre drop.  It’s quite impressive, particularly after plenty of rainfall.  This is the largest pool, although it was too shallow for actual swimming when we visited.

For actual swimming, the Spa Fish was the deepest pool, although one of the smallest.

It is a steep walk to reach the very top – but it only took us around 35 minutes to get to the top pool.  And it’s much easier and quicker to come back down.

The waterfall is within the national park, so you must pay an entry fee.  If you purchase this ticket, be sure to keep it as on the same day, you’ll be able to use it for entry into Lampi Waterfall as well as do any of the hiking trails within the National Park.

Location: M74P+FV2, Takua Pa, Takua Pa District

Hours: Daily from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm

Price: 100 THB per person (approx $4.30 AUD)

Khao Lal Phu View Restaurant

For a meal with a spectacular view, head to Khao Lal Phu View Restaurant. This lovely hilltop restaurant has an incredible 180° view overlooking the entire town of Khao Lak and its beautiful coastline.

The view from here is amazing at any time of the day, but it’s even more spectacular around sunset – one of the awesome things to see in Khao Lak.

This restaurant serves a range of Thai food and other Western food.  Most meals start at around 100 THB.

You’ll need to hike up the steep road to reach the restaurant, which should take about 10 minutes, or you can take a free songtaew at the street corner near the main road. You can drive up, but there is limited parking space at the top.

Given the view, this restaurant does get busy, so it’s well worth booking ahead.

Location: Khuekkhak, Takua Pa District

Hours: Daily from 10 am to 10 pm

Price: Meals from 100 THB (approx $4.30 AUD)

Bang Niang Food Market

If you’re looking for things to do in Khao Lak at night, you must visit the Bang Niang Food Market.

While this Khao Lak night market is open from 2 pm, evenings are the best time to come, as this is when the markets are at their busiest and there is a great atmosphere. Plus, it’s cooler too!

Come hungry and try out lots of yummy Thai food and make sure the kids bring their pocket money as it’s a great place for them to pick up some souvenirs.

Location: Phet Kasem Rd, Khuekkhak, Takua Pa District

Hours: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10 am to 11 pm

Price: Entry is free

Tsunami Memorial Park

Another one of the things to do in Khao Lak Town is to visit the Tsunami Memorial Park – just across the road from the markets – so it’s easy to combine the two in one visit.

As many of you will know on Boxing Day in 2004, an earthquake occurred in the Indian Ocean, causing a series of tsunamis that killed many people in South East Asia.  In Thailand, the Khao Lak area was the worst affected area, with more than 4,000 locals and tourists killed.

While it’s recorded that some 4000 people lost their lives just within Khao Lak, it’s suggested that the number of lives lost is likely to be more than 10,000.  The reason is there were many undocumented workers in the area at the time and many of these people were killed.

At the time of the tsunami, Khao Lak was undergoing much development, with several resorts and restaurants under construction.  Unfortunately, most of this construction was simply washed away, as were existing resorts and restaurants.

On that day, Police Boat 813 was anchored about 1 nautical mile off the coast of Khao Lak. When the tsunami hit, the Police Boat 813 ended up 2 km inland, in Bang Niang, where it remains today as a stark reminder of the tragedy.

As well as the police boat, you’ll find a small shack here with photos and information about the tsunami.  The images are quite graphic, so please use caution when taking your children there.  Entry is free, but you’re encouraged to purchase a small trinket to help support the memorial.

Here, you’ll also find the Tsunami Memorial Museum, which has an entry fee of 300 THB (approximately $12.80 AUD) per adult and 100 THB (approximately $4.30 AUD) per child (under 130cm).  This is more formal than the little shack but has fewer graphic images, so it may be better suited for families.

Moo Moo Cabaret

For a bit of evening fun with the kids, why not head to Moo Moo Cabaret to see some very entertaining ladyboys.  While you might think Ladyboys is for adults only – this is a very tasteful show and I can assure you that most kids will love it!

Don’t expect anything too fancy though – but do expect some very amusing lip syncing.

The show is nightly at 8.45 pm – which makes this a great activity after visiting the night markets.

It’s worth booking ahead – you can contact them via their Facebook page or ask your hotel to book for you.

A night at the Moo Moo Cabaret is certainly one of the fun things to do in Khao Lak.

Location: Phet Kasem Road, Ban Bang Niang

Hours: Daily from 7 pm to midnight

Price: 300 THB (approximately $12.80 AUD) per person – includes a free drink

Khao Lak Labyrinth / Maze

If you’re after more fun things to do Khao Lak has specially for the kids – consider taking the little ones to the Khao Lak Labyrinth /  Maze.

The labyrinth is made of well kept hedges and pathways, meandering back and forth with hidden nooks and crannies, and is a fun activity for the family to bond over as you all work together to try and get out.

Location: 16 / 11 Chong Fah Water Fall Road, Bang Niang Beach

Hours: Daily from 8.30 am to 8.30 pm

Price: 100 THB (approximately $4.30 AUD) per person

Khao Lak Mini Golf

Next to the labyrinth is Khao Lak Mini Golf, which is another one of the top things to do Khao Lak has for families.

All mini golf courses have a theme and this one is said to be something like an Indiana Jones set.  It’s an 18 hole mini golf course that starts easy, with the difficulty level steadily increasing.  The holes are set among courses trailing through jungle vegetation, temple ruins, and the typical obstacles.

Just remember this is Thailand, so going later in the day is worthwhile; otherwise, you’ll get very hot and sweaty!

Entry includes water, a cold towel and mosquito spray.  If you go to mini golf and the maze, you can get a combined ticket, saving you 50 THB (approximately $2.15 AUD) per person.

Location: 16/11 Chongfa Waterfall Bangniang Beach

Hours: Daily from 8 am to 7 pm

Price: 450 THB (approximately $19.20 AUD) per adult | 350 THB (approximately $15 AUD) per child (under 120 cm)

Sai Rung Waterfall / Rainbow Waterfall

Sai Rung, also known as Rainbow Waterfall, is a narrow yet high waterfall (20 metres) in a shady forest grove with a small pool below connected to a lovely crystal clear stream.  You can swim here too.

It’s just a short walk from the car park to the waterfall – it took us at most 5 minutes.

However, what makes this waterfall unique and among the top 10 things to do in Khao Lak is not so much the waterfall itself but that there are a few restaurants where the tables and chairs are set up in the shallow stream.

We dined at Kur Marlee Restaurant, a short drive from the waterfall.  Well worth it though – we enjoyed some yummy Thai food.

Location: P7RH+HXC, Khuekkhak, Takua Pa District

Price: Entrance to the waterfall is free, although 20 THB (approximately $0.85 AUD) if you’re parking.

Ban Namkhem Tsunami Memorial Park

If you want to visit the various Tsunami memorials in town, then one of the other things to do at Khao Lak is to visit the Ban Namkhem Tsunami Memorial Park.

Ban Namkhem, a fishing village, was one of the communities profoundly affected by the Boxing Day tsunami. The memorial park is a tribute to the lives lost and the resilience of the survivors and features a series of sculptures and plaques.

One of the more prominent structures is the curved concrete wall, representing the tsunami that took the lives of so many.  The wall has the names and faces of some of the locals and tourists who died in Ban Namkhem.

Location: V758+M3G, Takua Pa District

Price: Free

Ban Namkhen Tsunami Musuem

Just a short drive from the Ban Namkhem Memorial is a museum commemorating the disaster.  If you’re just going to visit one tsunami museum or memorial, I recommend this one.

This is a modern museum with various rooms where you can learn about various things relating to the tsunami.  There’s information about how the tsunami was formed, where it hit, people’s experiences during it, and what happened afterwards.

Upon arriving at the museum, we were greeted by a staff member who took us to see a short video.  Afterwards, she guided us around the museum, providing information as we went.

There are no graphic images, so it’s safe to bring children into this museum.  There are a few interactive exhibits that they may also enjoy, as well as various items that were salvaged after the tsunami.

Allow around 45 minutes to see this museum.

Location: Village No 2 Bang Muang, Takua Pa District

Hours: Wednesday to Sunday from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm

Price: Free

Tsunami Victims Cemetery

A short drive from the memorial park is the Tsunami cemetery.  While a cemetery may not be for everyone, those deeply saddened by the tragedy may find some comfort in coming to pay their respects to those who lost their lives.

This cemetery is the resting place for those people who have not been able to be identified under international standards.  Unfortunately, this means they’re unable to be returned to their families.

The unidentified people are buried in metal coffins, surrounded by concrete chambers to preserve as much DNA as possible in the hope that someday they can be identified.

Ko Kho Kao Island

Just a few hundred metres off the coast of Khao Lak is Ko Kho Kao Island – one of the stunning islands near Khao Lak.

Ko Kho Kai Island remains untouched by mass tourism and is one of the easy boat trips Khao Lak offers families.  There are even a few places to stay if you’d like to stay a little longer.

The beaches here (particularly the west coast beaches fronting the Andaman Sea) are the main attraction, with Pak Koh Beach being the most popular among tourists.  There are also several restaurants, most being part of the resorts along the stunning beachfront.

Getting to Ko Kho Kao Island is easy.  From Baan Nam Khem port, you can take a ferry or a longtail boat across to the island.  Boats don’t tend to run on a strict schedule – they just leave when they’re full.  The boat ride across to the island takes around 15 minutes.

On the island, there are plenty of taxis to take you around.  A surfaced road runs the length of the island – any beaches or places of interest can be found by branching off this road at some point.

So, if you’re looking for easy excursions from Khao Lak, consider a day trip to Ko Kho Kao Island.

Location: Mu 2 Pier, Ban Nam Khem, Tambon Bang Muang, Amphoe Takua Pa

Old Takua Pa Sunday Market

If your family enjoys browsing the markets, another one of the things to do around Khao Lak is to visit the Old Takua Pa Sunday Market.  The town’s main street is closed to traffic, so visitors can safely stroll around the stalls.

While you’re in town, it’s worthwhile having a look around. The old Sino Portuguese buildings are just stunning, and there are some great quaint cafes and local restaurants.

You could also walk down to the riverfront and explore some of the Chinese Shrines and Temples.

Location: R9H7+RX2, Thanon Sri Takuapa, Takua Pa

Hours:  Sunday from 3 pm to 8 pm

Price:  Entry is free

Little Amazon

I reckon one of the top ten things to do in Khao Lak with the kids is to go to Little Amazon.  This area is near Takua Pa and has a real jungle vibe with mangroves and little meandering waterways.

You can only explore Little Amazon by taking a guided kayak tour.  These tours go for 1 hour, and you’ll paddle through the lush vegetation and hopefully see a range of wildlife, such as birds, lizards, snakes, frogs and monkeys!

We saw tonnes of snakes and a huge monitor lizard – in fact, we saw it swim across the creek before climbing onto the bank.  We also saw heaps of monkeys and again – we saw two of them swimming across.

You won’t even need to paddle; just sit back, relax and enjoy the ride and, of course, the scenery!

Location: 41 1, Bang Nai Si, Takua Pa District

Hours: Daily 8 am to 5 pm

Price: 1000 THB (approximately $43 AUD) per kayak

ATV Tour

Another one of the super fun day tours from Khao Lak is to go on an ATV Tour.  Most tours go for a few hours and may include other attractions, such as a trip to one of the waterfalls or an elephant sanctuary.

No experience is necessary – you’ll be given comprehensive instructions from your guide before setting off.  Often, even kids as young as 12 can drive their own ATV, and kids younger than that can sit on the back with a parent.

Tip: Check to ensure your travel insurance covers you for this, as some don’t!

Click here to see a range of different ATV tours you can do from Khao Lak.

Charter a car and drive and go sightseeing

One of the best ways to do some of the above activities is to hire a car and driver.  This is what we did, and we found it to be a really convenient way of seeing things.

I’d recommend you make a list of what you’d like to do and then bunch things together that are in a similar location.  Then, decide how long you’ll need and grab yourself a driver for this period.

To find a driver, you can easily arrange this on the street, with your hotel or online.

We arranged ours through Khao Lak Airport Transfers. As well as airport transfers (we used them for that, too), they will come and pick you up and take you wherever you like.

One day trip we did included Little Amazon, the Tsunami Museum, the Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Memorial Park and Sai Rung Waterfall.

Our second day trip included the Sea Turtle Conservation Centre, Khao Lak Ru National Park Visitor Centre and Ton Chang Far Waterfall.

We booked a 5 hour car charter, which was 1900 THB (approximately $81 AUD) for 4-9 people – each hour after 5 hours is charged at 300 THB (approximately $12.80 AUD).  You can even request a baby seat if you have a little one.

Best day trips from Khao Lak

While there is plenty to do in Khao Lak itself, without any need to go anywhere else, this is a good base to do some fabulous day trips.

Below, we cover some of the best day trips Khao Lak offers families.

Similan Islands

Ever since I started visiting Thailand some 20 plus years ago – it’s always been a dream of mine to visit the Similan Islands – and finally, on this trip, I got to go!

This archipelago of 11 islands features crystal-clear turquoise waters, powdery white-sand beaches, and vibrant coral reefs. The kids will love exploring underwater, seeing an array of colourful fish, and, with any luck, seeing beautiful sea turtles and manta rays.

While many operators visit the Similan Islands from Phuket – it’s much closer and direct to go from Khao Lak.  Whether you’re after the best diving Khao Lak offers, or the best snorkelling Khao Lak offers – the Similan Islands is it!

Most tours include a few different snorkelling stops, with the first stop usually around 60 to 90 minutes after you set off by speedboat.

While you can easily book a tour once you’re in Khao Lak – I recommend doing some research before leaving home and booking with an operator that comes well recommended.  You can usually cancel your booking within 24 hours of the tour if you change your mind for whatever reason.

We did our tour with Wow Andaman, and I highly recommend it.  Every part of the tour was so well organised.  We had plenty to eat and drink all day.  The kids will love having an ice cream offered after every stop!  Meanwhile, adults will appreciate the unlimited cold cans of soft drinks, which are so welcomed on a hot day.

Our tour included breakfast, lunch, loads of snacks, dinner and drinks, as well as all our snorkelling gear etc.  It was a great tour and one I’d recommend to families wanting to visit the Similar Islands.

Click here to see a range of tours to Similan Islands available.

Khao Sok National Park

While we spent a few days exploring the stunning Khao Sok National Park – if you only have enough time for a day trip – it’s still well worth it.  And being only an hour’s drive away, a Khao Sok day trip from Khao Lak is very doable.

With its ancient rainforest, limestone cliffs, and emerald-green lakes, Khao Sok National Park is a haven for nature enthusiasts. Whether you hike through the jungle, float down the river or explore the pristine Cheow Lan Lake, with its towering limestone karsts you’re sure to have a fantastic day.

There is a range of tours on offer – but if possible, I recommend you choose one that includes a Cheow Lan Lake tour from Khao Lak.

While you can easily book a tour once you’re in Khao Lak – I recommend doing some research before leaving home and booking with an operator that comes well recommended.  You can usually cancel your booking within 24 hours of the tour if you change your mind for whatever reason.

Click here to see a range of Khao Sok tours from Khao Lak.

Phuket

With Phuket just an hour or two by car away – a day trip to this popular beachside destination is possible.  Again, I’d recommend staying for a few days in Phuket instead because there is so much to do there.

If you decide you want to make a day trip to Phuket – I’d recommend you check out our guide to all the things to do in Phuket with kids – make a list of what you want to do and organise a full day car charter.

You can organise this while in town or book online before leaving town.  Khao Lak Airport Transfers offer 10 hours for 4200 THB (approximately $180 AUD) for 4-9 people – which is an excellent price.  You can even request a baby seat if you have a little one.

Pha Nga Bay

Pha Nga Bay is another popular day trip from Khao Lak among families.  While famous for appearing in an old James Bond movie, the bay is just stunning, with its limestone cliffs dramatically rising from the emerald green waters.

The area is best explored by a longtail boat, where you can paddle around the bay to see some of the hidden lagoons and caves.  You’ll float past mangrove forests, floating villages and hopefully spot some wildlife along the way, all the while enjoying the pristine water and the incredible landscape.

While you can easily book a tour once you’re in Khao Lak – I recommend doing some research before leaving home and booking with an operator that comes well recommended.  You can usually cancel your booking within 24 hours of the tour if you change your mind for whatever reason.

Click here to see a range of Pha Nga Bay tours from Khao Lak.

Phi Phi Islands

While best visited as a day trip from Phuket, it is possible to visit Phi Phi Islands from Khao Lak on a day trip.  And like I’ve said for most places in this section – I’d recommend Phi Phi Island is better explored over a few days.  However, even I have only visited on a few day trips over the decades.

Most tours depart the mainland by speedboat, and as you get closer to the islands, you’ll see aquamarine waters that gradually give way to the iconic limestone cliffs and palm-fringed beaches that characterise this archipelago.

Activities throughout the day usually include a few snorkelling stops, exploring hidden coves and caves, and a stop to the pristine white sands of Maya Bay, famously featured in the movie “The Beach.”

On the main island, you can go shopping, bar hopping, or swim on the gorgeous beaches.  This is usually where you’ll get lunch too.

While you can easily book a tour once you’re in Khao Lak – I recommend doing some research before leaving home and booking with an operator that comes well recommended.  You can usually cancel your booking within 24 hours of the tour if you change your mind for whatever reason.

How to get to Khao Lak?

So how to get to Khao Lak?

Well, you could be coming to Khao Lak from a range of places around Thailand or elsewhere in South East Asia – so let’s narrow it down to say that it’s best reached from either Phuket, Krabi or Surat Thani.

Phuket, Krabi and Surat Thani are the closest destinations to Khao Lak that you can fly into.  There is no airport for Khao Lak; the closest airport to Khao Lak is Phuket, just over an hour’s drive away.  Krabi Airport is 2.5 hours drive and Surat Thani Airport is just under 3 hours away.

You can also fly into Koh Samui – however, unless you plan on spending time in Koh Samui, this would be the least cost effective way, as flights to Koh Samui tend to be fairly expensive.

So do your research on flights from wherever you’re coming from and choose one of those destinations to start from.

I recommend checking flights on Skyscanner first, then booking with the airline directly.

Getting from Phuket to Khao Lak

Getting from Phuket to Khao Lak by bus is the cheapest method of transport.  You’ll need to make your way to the Phuket bus terminal 2, and from here, take a bus to Khao Lak.

You can take any bus going to Takua Pa, Ranong or Surat Thani, but tell the driver you would like to stop in Khao Lak. The entire journey takes around 2.5-3 hours and costs about 260 THB per person.

There are no buses leaving from Phuket Airport to Khao Lak, so in this case, the next best option is to take a shared minivan (or make your way to the bus station first).  A shared minivan departs from Phuket Airport to Khao Lak a few times daily, costing around 600 THB per person.  This trip takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.

If you’re coming from one of the beachside areas in Phuket, a minivan will cost around 1000 THB per person and take about 3.5 to 4 hours.

You can book your shared minivan here.

Getting to Khao Lak from Phuket by private taxi is the easiest and most convenient way.

From Phuket Airport, this costs 1400 -2000 THB (depending on where you’re going in Khao Lak), and the journey will take approximately 1 to 2.5 hours.

From one of the beachside areas in Phuket, this costs 2200 -2600 THB (depending on where you’re going in Khao Lak), and the journey will take approximately 1 to 2.5 hours.

If booking a private transfer – we recommend Khao Lak Airport Transfer – this is who we used for all our private transfers and had a great experience in Khao Lak.  They are also among the cheapest you’ll find.

We don’t earn a commission from them (we do if you book through Get Your Guide), but we still recommend them anyway.

Click here for our detailed guide on getting from Phuket to Khao Lak.

Getting from Krabi to Khao Lak

There are no buses leaving from Krabi to Khao Lak, so the cheapest way to go is via a shared minivan.

Quite a few shared minivans depart from Krabi Bus Terminal to Khao Lak throughout the day.  The Krabi Bus Terminal is about 30 minutes from Ao Nang Beach or 20 minutes from the Krabi Airport.

There is also a shared minivan leaving from town at 11.30 am or from the Ao Nam Mao Pier at 11.20 am.

Shared minivans cost around 400 THB per person from the bus terminal or 500 THB from town, and the trip takes 3-3.5 hours.  In Khao Lak, you’ll be dropped off at the McDonalds in the centre of town, so you’ll need to make your own way to your hotel from there.

No vans leave from the Krabi Airport, so you must go to the Krabi Bus Terminal or town first.  There are only two minivans going from the airport to town each day, which costs 150 THB per person and takes just 20 minutes.

Getting Around Khao Lak

The most popular way to travel short distances around Khao Lak is via taxi.

Taxis in Khao Lak are not your typical metred taxi you’re most likely used to seeing.  Generally, they are private vans or small pick up trucks with seating in the back.  Either option offers a set price, which, generally you won’t need to barter for.

You can see the price list above, which was outside our hotel at X10.  Note that these prices are for 2 people each way – with each additional person paying 50 THB.

For travelling further afield or for a day of sightseeing, you’re best off hiring a car and driver.  You can easily find cars with drivers on the street, but you must be prepared to haggle over the price.

Otherwise, you can book in advance with a company like Khao Lak Airport Transfers. As well as airport transfers (we used them for that too), they will come and pick you up and take you wherever you like.  For 5 hours, you’ll pay 1900 THB for 4-9 people.

You could also hire a car yourself.  There are many car rentals around the island; in most cases, even your resort should be able to hook you up with a car.  You can also book one via Klook.  If I return to Khao Lak, I’ll hire a car to get around.  The traffic isn’t as bad here as it is in Phuket.
