Where to Stay in Hanoi with Family

Like any city, the best area to stay in Hanoi really depends on how much money you want to spend and which attractions you want to visit.  I personally think the best location to stay in Hanoi is around the city centre in either the Hoan Kiem or Ba Dinh Districts.  Form both these districts you can easily and cheaply get around to see the various attractions.

Below I’ve included a brief overview of the Hoan Kiem and Ba Dinh Districts.

Hoan Kiem District

Hoan Kiem District is the centre of the city and encompasses two very distinct areas – namely the Old Quarter as well as the French Quarter.  These two areas are divided by the Hoan Kiem Lake.

I personally love staying in the Old Quarter, because I just love the vibe of this busy and colourful area of Hanoi.  Here you will find lots of narrow streets with colourful old colonial buildings.  The area is a constant buzz with locals going about their day to day business.  There are plenty of cheap places to shop, eat and sleep.  This is definitely the area to stay for those wanting one of the best Hanoi budget hotels.

When it comes to cheap hotels in Hanoi, Old Quarter keep in mind a few things.  Firstly many of the budget hotels do not have a lift, and you may be required to walk up several flights of stairs.  So if this is an issue, please check before you book whether or not the hotel has a lift.  Secondly, many hotels in Vietnam think it’s okay for an entire family to sleep in one bed, so before booking a hotel check that it actually has enough beds for everyone.  All the hotels I’ve listed in this article have bedding for everyone.

The French Quarter, on the other hand, has wide boulevards and many luxury hotels.  In this area you will find large shopping malls, government buildings and upmarket restaurants.

There are many attractions in Hoan Kiem District including the Dong Xuan Market, the Thanh Long Water Puppet Theatre, Bia Hoi Junction, Hoa Lo Prison Museum, Hoan Kiem Lake, the Hanoi Weekend Night Market and more.

Ba Dinh District

The District of Ba Dinh is where you will find many historical attractions in Hanoi.  Attractions here include the Temple of Literature and Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum.  The area also has a good range of mid-priced hotels and restaurants.

If you’re not keen on the chaos of the Old Quarter, Ba Dinh District is definitely the better choice for you.
