Where to Stay in Kuala Lumpur with Family

There are a few different options when it comes to the best Kuala Lumpur area to stay. Although in my view the best family attractions in KL are more or less clumped together in the KLCC area or even as far down as the area around the KL Tower and Chinatown.  I’d recommend you work out where most of the attractions are that you want to visit and then choose an area that is closest to the most places on your itinerary.

Below I’ve provided a brief overview of the areas within KL so you can choose the best place to stay in Kuala Lumpur with kids.

Bukit Bintang

My number one recommendation for where to stay in KL is Bukit Bintang – this is where we decided to stay on our trip to KL. Bukit Bintang is the centre of all the action and within easy reach to a range of great family attractions as well as shopping malls and places to eat.

Bukit Bintang is also well connected with a monorail station and an MRT station, so it’s easy to get to other parts of the city, although you’ll also find plenty of taxis and Grabs (like Uber) around too.

This area is also great for people looking for budget family accommodation in Kuala Lumpur, including hotels as well as apartments. In this area of KL, you can get a lot for your money!

Kuala Lumpur City Centre

Kuala Lumpur at night

Right next to Bukit Bintang, this area has a stack of family-friendly attractions, so is another one of the best places to stay in Kuala Lumpur for families. This area is where you will find the Petronas Towers, and so you might even be able to get a hotel room with a view of them.

KLCC has plenty of shops and places to eat, and you’ll easily be able to walk to a range of attractions. Plus, there is also plenty of public transport around to get you further afield.

Kuala Lumpur family Accommodation in KLCC is probably at the higher end then Bukit Bintang, so this is the area to stay if you want 5-star Kuala Lumpur family resorts.

KL Tower – Bukit Nanas

kuala-lumpur Tower

Bordering the area of KLCC and Bukit Bintang is the area around the KL Tower – which of course is where the KL Tower is located. Another popular attraction in this area is the KL Eco Park.

While there aren’t too many attractions in this area, it is well situated for reaching the attractions in KLCC and Bukit Bintang. From this area you can pretty much walk to most attractions, making it a super convenient location.

You will find around KL Tower, mostly a business neighbourhood, so it’s probably more limited in places to eat and shop at night unlike KLCC or Bukit Bintang.

KL Sentral and Lake Gardens

If you’re just passing through KL and wanting to be close to the main transport hub of KL Sentral, then this is the best place to stay in KL – otherwise, I’d recommend choosing one of the above areas.

Don’t get me wrong, with the main train station being right here; you’ll easily be able to get around the city. However, you most likely will need to get transport every time you go out, as opposed to being able to walk although there are some great nearby attractions such as the Bird Park and Little India.

Nevertheless, the area has some great accommodation options, plenty of places to eat as well as shops.

Chinatown

Just under the area surrounding the KL Tower is Chinatown, one of the great places to stay in KL if you want to be surrounded by the hustle and bustle of Chinatown. As well as the food and shopping area of Chinatown, other attractions in the area include a range of gorgeous temples, Merdeka Square, and the River of Life. It’s also just a great area to go wandering down little laneways and admiring the stunning old buildings.

Chinatown is where you will find good budget Kuala Lumpur places to stay – it’s in fact a haven for backpackers.

Chow Kit, Kampung Baru and Masjid India

These areas don’t really have a lot of tourist attractions, yet are great places to stay in Kuala Lumpur if you prefer to escape the typical tourist areas after a day of sightseeing. For convenience, I’d recommend you stay in one of the above areas already mentioned.

Bangsar South

Even further out of town is Bangsar South, a quiet residential area which is somewhat upmarket with modern highrise buildings. There is quite a lot of shopping malls and hotels here and plenty of places to eat, so another good choice for those that want to get away from the tourist areas at night, however certainly not the best place to stay in Kuala Lumpur for tourist families.

The Best Kuala Lumpur Family Hotels

In this Kuala Lumpur accommodation for families guide, I’ve located what I think is KL’s best value accommodation. I think the first thing you will notice about KL is just how much value you get for your money.

You can pay next to nothing for a budget family hotel in KL, or have a splurge on a 5 star Kuala Lumpur hotel family room and still pay less than what you would for a budget hotel in another SEA city.

Below I have reviewed 12 options to help you choose the best hotel in KL for family.  The blue pins in the map below show the location of all the accommodation.  Zoom the map in and out for a better view.

Where to Book your Family Hotel in KL?

Mostly I prefer to use Booking.com as I find they not only offer a great range of family friendly hotels in KL but in most cases, you don’t need to pay anything upfront, AND you can cancel if you change your mind or find a better deal elsewhere.

Plus, if you open an account and use them regularly, many of the hotels and resorts on booking.com offer a “genius” discount where you really can make some great savings.

I have provided links to Booking.com for the above family hotels in Kuala Lumpur, or you can click here.

1 thought on “Where to Stay in Kuala Lumpur with Family”

  1. Thank you for sharing this information. It is always difficult for me to choose the right hotel for traveling with my family. We are planning a trip to Kuala Lumpur in the summer with our family and are now choosing the right hotel. I really liked the option in the Fairlane Premier Suite, it is very good that there is a kitchen and you can cook at home and save significantly on food during the trip. This is probably one of the best options, thanks! Good luck!
