Best Area to Stay in Hervey Bay

Hervey Bay is a relatively large area and so there are various places that people can stay when coming to town. However, most people tend to stay in one of the areas along the Esplanade between Urangan to Point Vernon.

If you have a car (which I highly recommend you do when coming to Hervey Bay), it probably doesn’t matter too much where exactly you stay.  However, those without a vehicle will probably want to base themself close to all the various attractions they plan on seeing.

The main tourist area is located between the marina at Urangan to Pialba and the area is made up of four main precincts as follows:

  • Urangan: The southern end of Hervey Bay – this is where you’ll find the marina, where the whale watching boats leave from, the start of the Esplanade, Reef World and the iconic Urangan Pier.  Here you’ll be within proximity to various places to eat.  This would be the best area to stay in Hervey Bay for those without a car.
  • Torquay: This is a good choice for those wanting to be close to the beach.  Torquay has a range of great accommodation options as well as cafes, shops and places to stay.  Plus, depending on where you stay, you are within walking distance to Urangan.
  • Scarness: This area is a little quieter than the above areas and tends to have fewer accommodation options.  Nevertheless, there are a few good options and there is also a range of excellent cafes, restaurants and shops.
  • Pialba:  On the northern end, Pialba is where you’ll find the Wetside Water Park and the excellent All Abilities Adventure Playground, making it a great area to stay if you plan on spending lots of time at the playground or waterpark.
  • Point Vernon:  For a quiet area away from the crowds, there is Point Veron.  This is a high rocky headland providing great views across the bay as well as places to swim.  There are fewer accommodation options here and limited shops and places to eat.

In the reviews below, I’ve provided at least one accommodation from each of the above locations.  You can see the location of each option in the map below.  Zoom in and out for a closer view.
