Where to stay in Caloundra with Kids
Caloundra is a very large area with many beaches, so you will need to decide which beach you want to base yourself, before you choose your Caloundra holiday accomodation.
To help you make this decision, I have provided an overview of all the Caloundra Beaches and what each offers families.
Golden Beach
Golden Beach is on the shores of the Pumicestone passage. Protected by the tip of Bribie Island, Golden Beach provides calm waters perfect for families. This is also where the Caloundra Coastal walk commences.
There are a variety of parks along Golden Beach. Playgrounds can be found at Ayliffe, Fraser and Westminster Parks. Fraser Park has a great range of play equipment for the kids, and there is also a great sandy patrolled beach here.
At Bill’s Boat & Bike Hire and Golden Beach Hire (both of which are along the Esplanade at Golden Beach, Sunshine Coast), you can hire a range of equipment, including boats, kayaks, bikes and SUP. This is a great way to explore the waters of the Pumicestone Passage and the northern tip of the Bribie Island National Park surrounds. You may also like to go further afield and explore the mansions on nearby Pelican Waters canals.
While there are a few cafes at the southern end of Golden Beach, there are not many cafes along the northern end; however nearby cafes in downtown Caloundra are a short walk away. A block back from the beach along Landsborough Parade between Beattie and Nelson Streets, you will find a range of shops and cafes, including fish and chips, Chinese, Thai and a bakery.
While essentially a quiet residential area, Golden Beach accommodation includes Oaks Oasis Caloundra Resort, Golden Beach Holiday Park, Gemini Resort Caloundra, Riviere on Golden Beach, Moorings Beach Resort, Windward Passage Caloundra Apartments, Sandy Shores Luxury Holiday Units, Ramada Resort and Belvedere Apartments. Bulcock Beach
If you like the calm waters of Golden Beach but want to be closer to the action, then Bulcock Beach is probably a perfect choice for you. Bulcock Beach is a popular Caloundra Beach with families, particularly ones with small children, due to the combination of both soft waves and calm waters. This is one of my favourite beaches in Caloundra.
This is also the place to be if you need to be close to shops as all the main shops and cafes of Caloundra are 5 minutes’ walk away, including cinemas.
There is also a gorgeous park at Happy Valley, with large trees providing lots of shade and plenty of green lawn for picnics. The kids will love the playground area; there is a large fort and pirate ship with various climbing equipment and slides. There is also swings here.

Kings Beach
One of the most popular Caloundra beaches is Kings Beach. As well as the beach, here you will find a free saltwater pool, various clubs and restaurants, playgrounds and a multitude of Caloundra holiday accommodation.
The beach here is a surf beach with gorgeous white powdery sand. If surf beaches aren’t your thing, head to the free 25 metre seawater swimming pool along the Kings Beach foreshore. The pool is great for kids and has plenty of seating and shade as well.
Just left to the beach and pool are the Kings Beach rock pools. The kids will enjoy fossicking and exploring sea life.
Little ones will love Lions Park and Kings Beach Park, which both have a great playground with climbing nets, ramps, slides and other play equipment.

Shelly Beach
Shelly Beach, Caloundra is a very pretty but rocky beach, so while not ideal for swimming, the Shelly Beach rock pools are excellent for fossicking and exploring marine life. Over 20 different marine species live in the rockpool ecosystem, including sea cucumbers, octopus, sea hare, and coral.
The parklands around Shelly Beach are lovely with a playground, BBQ and picnic facilities.
Shelly Beach is mainly residential; however, there are some nearby Caloundra resorts and apartments, such as Sea Point Ocean Apartments.
Moffat Beach
Moffat Beach is a picturesque surf beach and is ok for swimming depending upon the wave conditions. However, it is the ideal beach for surfers and home to one of Australia’s longest-running surf competition; The Ma and Pa Bendall Classic. Tooway Creek also spills out onto the beach here, which is great for small kids to splash about in.
There are two great kids playgrounds here at Moffat Beach Park and Eleanor Shipley Park, both offering fantastic views of the Moffat Beach Headland. This beach is very pretty – in my view, the prettiest beach in Caloundra.
There are a couple of good cafes along Seaview Terrace, and although Moffat Beach accommodation is somewhat limited, there is Norfolk’s on Moffat Beach and Raintrees Resort. See further information about these Caloundra hotels below.
Dicky Beach
Dicky Beach Caloundra is a popular beach for families with its surf beach, skate park and playgrounds, not to mention one of the few places where you find Caloundra beachfront accommodation.
While the town of Dicky Beach is a small area, there are a few good cafes. Dicky Beach accommodation is limited – but some popular spots include Dicky Beach Caravan Park and Portobello by the Sea. Further information about this holiday accommodation Caloundra has can be found below.
Currimundi Lakes
Currimundi has a gorgeous lake well protected from the wind. There is a large shallow sandbank, perfect for swimming, particularly for families with small children. The depth of the water varies from ankle to waist-deep. Around the lake are huge she-oaks, paperbarks and banksia trees that provide plenty of shade.
The lake is also the ideal spot for kayaking and stand up paddleboarding. You can bring your own equipment or hire from Kitethrills.
There is also a playground close by to the lake at Cliff Hargreaves Park. Here you will find BBQ facilities and toilets.
If you prefer a surf beach, just around the corner, you will find Currimundi Surf Beach.
Cafes are relatively limited in the area, with only Coco’s Beach Cafe and Kite Thrills Beach Espresso Bar in the area.
Unfortunately, there is no Currimundi holiday accommodation in terms of hotels or resorts; however you may be able to find some good private holiday houses Caloundra has.

Below I have reviewed some of the best low cost options for the best family accommodation Caloundra offers.
Oaks Oasis Resort
When looking where to stay in Caloundra, Oaks Oasis Resort is hard to ignore. This relaxing resort is set amongst 10 acres of landscaped tropical gardens. Perfect whether you’re looking for Caloundra hotel accommodation or Caloundra holiday apartments.
The Oaks, Caloundra has a variety of accommodation suitable for everyone like hotel style, executive family rooms with two large beds, two bedroom villas that sleep 4 people and three-Bedroom Villas, able to sleep up to 6 guests.
If you usually opt for self-contained accommodation, don’t dismiss the hotel-style rooms straight away. Rooms at Oaks Oasis Resort Caloundra are surprisingly spacious, and there is plenty of space for a family of 4. There is no kitchen, but rooms do come with a small fridge and some cutlery and crockery, so it’s possible to prepare snacks and breakfast in your room. Also, the bathroom is a perfect size, so the whole family can be in and out without squashing past each other!
Apartments and villas at The Oaks Resort, Caloundra, are spacious. However, sizes vary by price, and all include a well-stocked kitchenette with a dishwasher, private balcony, flat-screen television, free wifi and air conditioning throughout. Baby cots/extra beds are also available but do have to be requested in advance.
One of the best things about Oasis Caloundra is the resort facilities! There is something for everyone with an outdoor swimming pool, spa pool, water play park with splash pool, waterslides and fountains, and volleyball and tennis courts. In addition, there is putt-putt golf, a sandpit, a climbing frame and a giant Kangaroo Jumper. There is even a restaurant and bar with poolside access. The Oasis Resort, Caloundra, also has free parking for guests with their own vehicles.

Gemini Resort Caloundra
The Gemini Resort apartments (also often called the Gemini Towers Caloundra) is a beachfront Golden Beach Resort, Caloundra offers, overlooks Pumicestone Passage and offers well stocked, comfortable self-contained accommodation.
These Caloundra accommodation apartments have two bedrooms and can accommodate up to 4 people with one double bed and two singles. This holiday apartment Caloundra has provides the option of garden views or ocean views. All individual apartments have a kitchen with a dishwasher, two bathrooms, laundry, air conditioning throughout, free wifi and television with Netflix.
These Caloundra holiday units have a restaurant on site, BBQ areas, full-size tennis courts, a sauna room, table tennis and even a private beach with loungers and umbrellas included. There is also a walk-in heated pool that is great for little ones who like to splash in the shallow area.

Belvedere Apartments
If you are looking for a little more space but don’t want to pay a fortune for Caloundra beachfront accommodation, Belvedere offers 3 bedroom apartments for nearly the same price as a two bedroom! It’s perfect if you’re after one of the budget Golden Beach holiday rentals.
These holiday apartments Caloundra has come with either two or three bedrooms and are all very spacious. Two bedroom apartments can fit up to 4 guests in a double bed and two singles, whereas three bedrooms can fit up to 6 in two singles and two doubles.
The apartments feature air conditioning throughout, a kitchen with an oven and dishwasher, a large balcony area with outdoor dining, laundry facilities and an open plan living and dining area inside with flat-screen television and comfortable sofas. Three bedroom apartments even have two bathrooms to make sharing much easier!
The Belvedere apartments Caloundra has a small outdoor pool and a BBQ area alongside a giant noughts and crosses game to keep kids entertained while adults cook. Right across the road is a playground, picnic and BBQ area overlooking the beach. Free parking is available for all guests and free wifi is available throughout the hotel and in all rooms.

Big 4 Caloundra Holiday Park
Big 4 are well known for offering budget accommodation and heaps of great facilities and the Big 4 Caloundra holiday park is no different.
There is a range of accommodation options at the Caloundra Big 4 holiday park, with the most budget option being a one bedroom villa. These can sleep up to 4 guests in one double bed and one set of single bunk beds and, if you’ve been to a Big 4 before, you’ll instantly recognise the layout.
All cabins, regardless of size, have air conditioning, free wifi and come with a well-stocked kitchenette with a hob, microwave and fridge, so it’s easy to prepare basic meals. There is also a small seating area, dining area and an outdoor deck.
The Big 4 Caravan Park, Caloundra, isn’t just about cheap accommodation though, as there are many excellent facilities on site. There is a great outdoor pool for kids with shaded sections and waterslide, as well as a rock-climbing wall, jumping pillow, playground and pedal carts for hire. In addition, guests have access to shared laundry facilities, an outdoor BBQ area and free parking.

Watermark Resort
Families looking for cheap places to stay in Caloundra would be hard pushed to find anything more suitable than Watermark Resort.
Family accommodation at Watermark Resort is in two bedroom, air-conditioned apartments that can sleep 4 guests in one double bed and two single beds. Each apartment features a balcony offering water views, a fully equipped kitchen with an oven and dishwasher, open plan living/dining with flat screen tv and laundry facilities within the bathroom, and a bathtub, making it perfect for little ones.

For families, after affordable self contained accommodation Caloundra has, then the Breakfree Grand Pacific is worth considering. This affordable resort even provides families with and an outdoor area with stunning views over the water.
Two bedroom accommodation sleeps up to 4 family members in a double bed and two single beds. Apartments are compact but have everything needed to cater for yourself with a well-stocked kitchen, laundry facilities, a lounge area and even an outdoor balcony. Capeview Apartments
Located opposite Kings Beach, Capeview Apartments Caloundra are self-contained apartments, some with balconies offering ocean views towards Moreton Island.

The ULTIQA Shearwater Resort offers modern Kings Beach holiday accommodation close to the beach with some convenient facilities on site.
Family apartments usually sleep up to 4 in one double bed and two singles, but the resort will add a small cot bed for a small extra cost. These apartments are spacious, and the open plan living/dining area is a good size for families. The kitchen is well stocked, the bathroom has a shower and a spa bath, and every apartment has its own private balcony with a seating area. Free wifi and air conditioning are available in every unit.

Dicky Beach Caravan Park Caloundra
Caloundra Holiday Parks are great for families and a great one to consider is the one at Dicky Beach. The Dicky Beach Holiday Park is an excellent option for any family looking for budget accommodation as well as some great facilities.
The holiday park offers studio units that are compact but manage to fit a lot in. They can sleep families of 4 in one double bed and one set of single bunk beds. There is a small en-suite bathroom with a shower and a kitchenette suitable for preparing basic meals and snacks and includes a stovetop, microwave and fridge. All units also have air conditioning throughout.
This Caloundra Holiday Park offers families plenty to do with a partially covered swimming pool, full size tennis court, children’s playground, BBQs and a recreation room with a pool table and arcade games. There is even direct beach access to Dicky Beach.
